Guest network access and Parental control settings for Linksys E1000 router

Updated on June 15, 2010

Open the Cisco connect software on your main computer. Cisco connect software is the software that comes with the Linksys E series router. You can not use Parental control or Guest access settings without installing the Cisco connect software.

Yes, you can setup your router without CD or Cisco connect software.

Parental control:

When you open the Cisco connect, you will find the option Parental control.

Click on that option. It will open the parental control settings page. Using this feature, you can limit the Internet access of the devices in the network. When you set up this function for the first time, it will ask you create the password. Please create a simple password that you can remember because if you forget that password there is no way to retrieve the password. You will need to reset the router to the factory default settings. You can rename the devices in your network. Select the particular device from the list and limit the Internet access for that computer. You can specify timing for the Internet access. If you are blocking the access of kids computer then you can use the option during school nights.

School nights are: Sunday night to Thursday night.
Weekends are: Friday night to Saturday night.

You can also block specific websites for different computers. This is a very good feature that Linksys has added in Cisco connect software.

Guest network access for Linksys E1000, E2000, E3000 routers

Guest network access is NOT unsecured.

This is another very good feature that you can use with Linksys E series router. As I explained earlier, you can use Guest access only if you install the Cisco connect software.

So your primary network and the guest network will be different. You will be able to see 2 wireless networks. One is your primary network which will show you secured wireless network. You can use your family or office computers on this main network. Just connect to the main network and go on line.

Now if you have guest coming in, then you can tell then to use the Guest network which will show you as an unsecured network. The guest computer will not be able to access your main network. They can not connect to the computers in the main network or they can not access the router settings. The guest network will be totally different network. The IP address of the main network will be in the range of 192.168.1.X and the Guest network will be 192.168.33.X (where X may be any number).

Now as I said it will show you unsecured guest network and any one can connect to that network. Yes, definitely, anyone can connect to your unsecured guest network. But... but they can not access the Internet. When they will open the Internet browser, it will ask them to enter a password for the guest access. That means guest network is not unsecured network, there is a password protection to access the Internet. You can set up the password using the Cisco connect software. Go to Guest access settings and setup a password. You can also limit the number of computers to access this network. The maximum number of 10 computers can access this network.

You can not use Guest network access feature if you do not have Cisco connect software installed. Guest network access will work only on 2.4 GHz wireless signal and not on 5 GHz.

There is no option to set bandwidth for guest access. However you can limit the number of guest users form 1 to 1o.

Is there anyway to restrict website access on a guest account?

I can access the Parental controls on my home account on E2000, but can't see anywhere how to restrict sites on guest account.

I think you can try this.

Make sure that your computer is connected to the guest network. Check the IP address on your computer.

Your computer should get IP address like

If you are getting this type of IP address then try to access the Internet.

Open Internet browser and in the address bar type and see if that asks you for user name and password.

Can I use Guest network if I am not using Cisco connect software to install my E3000 router? I heard that Guest network is available only if I install CIsco connect software. Is it true?

Hate this cisco route. WTF I don't want password protection on the guest side. I want it open to anyone at my location.

Guest network access is useless if you have MAC filtering on. Now you still have to manually add the guest's MAC address to the allowed list so they can use the guest network.

Cisco Connect is installed on my laptop, but Parental Control shows only my laptop and doesn't show two other ones. Any ideas why?

If you forget the Parental control password, there is no way to retrieve it.

You will need to reset the router and reconfigure it.
