HTC Windows 8X review (and specs)

HTC Windows 8X review »»» PROS and CONS

Pros:

  • Construction | User´s Experience

Cons:

  • Battery Life | Impossibility of expansion

Verdict:

The HTC 8X smartphone is very beautiful and well finished, and Windows Phone has visibly improved. The screen is very good, the camera also allows you to make “dolls” with excellent quality – pity the low sound quality when recording video.
I don´t understand the short battery life and the impossibility to add more memory storage.
So, if you do not want to mix with the crowd this is an excellent option. I would even say that this mobile operating system is the only one that, if properly worked in the commercial and technical, is able to cope with the iOS.

The new Windows Phone 8 arrived to the market recently and with it also came new devices of various brands, including the new HTC 8X, which was built to take full advantage of this new version (8) of Microsoft's mobile operating system.

The screen of the HTC 8X is 4.3 inches with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution.

The processor is a dual-core Qualcomm S4 1.5 GHz. RAM is 1 GB and Flash memory for storage is 16 GB. Unfortunately, the storage capacity can not be expanded via memory cards.

The connectivity of the 8X is very complete, allowing access to mobile networks GSM / GPRS / EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and HSPA / WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, Bluetooth 3.1, WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n and NFC.

The rear camera is 8 MP. It includes a suitable chip for image processing and it offers the ability to record video in 1080p resolution. The front camera is 2 MP.

The battery can not be removed without disassembling the equipment and it offers a capacity of 1800 mAh.

The HTC 8X supports audio on:. Aac,. Amr,. M4a,. Mp3,. Wav,. Asf,. Wma and video in .3 gp, .3 g2,. Mp4, m4v, asf,. Wmv. The video recording is done in. Mp4 file.

All this in a 5.21 x 2.61 x 0.40 inches device, weighing 0,29 pounds.

HTC Windows 8X Review

The box is made of polycarbonate, in which is used a paint that gives a "rubber texture" to the device, and that is very pleasant to the touch.

The HTC 8X uses the same optical illusion that Apple decided to use in the new iMac where the edges are thin getting progressively thicker in the center. This delivers a "blade effect" when you grasp the device with a little more force.

The placement of the buttons is what you expect from a device of this type, but they are a bit difficult to operate because they have little height to the box. Because of this sometimes we can press a button inadvertently or use force in a place where there is no button.

The screen is very clear and it offers large contrasts, which is an asset in the Microsoft operating system that, in the main screens, uses a black background behind the tiles that serve as icons.

Software

Windows Phone 8, despite being visually very similar to the version 7, is a new operating system that aims to solve many problems of the previous version and allows a level of customization far superior to its predecessor.

In addition to the troubleshooting and optimizations, new features include a children's area that allows you "to separate" the phone that you use daily from the one that your children can use when they are waiting to get into the doctor's office and they want to play or listen to music. This feature prevents kids from sending messages or make purchases while using the smartphone.

A new "wallet" feature was also included and it allows you to make payments using the smartphone, for example through NFC, if the service is available.

Moreover, Windows Phone 8 integrates very well with all Microsoft services such as Hotmail, Office and Xbox 360.

Use

The integration of various social networking accounts and email is the most accomplished we've seen. The system collects all the contacts and, if you have the same contact in multiple accounts, it automatically joins them all in a single "file".

The camera works very well, although the sound pickup is not very good.

One thing that could have been resolved was the unification of email boxes, which continue to be completely separate.

The speed of the dual-core processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM makes the use of the device very nice and smooth, with excellent response times.

Like many other models from HTC, 8X also includes sound improvement system "Beats Audio", which promises a good quality sound when using headphones. Promises and fulfills! The sound has a good crop and a large dynamic range.

The battery performance is not that great. During our use, in which we used only the smartphone to talk, send SMS, use the agenda and we had three email accounts set up - it was just a push mail on - the battery could never last a full day without needs charging.

One little strange aspect, is that it is not possible to expand the flash memory of the HTC 8X, particularly in a device that is sold with only 16 GB, and where only about 12 GB are available to the user´s contents such as music, video and photos. One can say that there is the remote storage service Skydrive, but when there is no Internet, there is no Skydrive either ...
