Heavy Duty Material Handling Dollies
Material handling dollies.....what are they?
Material handling dollies are small platforms equipped with casters or wheels to facilitate movement. Unlike platform trucks, carts and other material handling equipment, dollies are typically smaller in size then the load that they are to carry. They are commonly used when the load is self supporting. A self supporting load will not deflect to the point that the load would be compromised.
In a typical loading application you would be putting a dolly at two ends of a load, or at four corners. The biggest problem encountered in this type of application is keeping the dolly in place. Some dolly systems come with tie bars, rubber pads, strapping, lips, or various other means of securing the load to the dolly.
Since the frame of the dolly is relatively small, and the load should be applied over the entire frame, the structure of the dolly does not need to be as robust as a platform truck that has to span a larger distance. This aspect of the dolly system helps make it an economical and versital piece of material handling equipment.

Where to get dollies
Dollies can be found almost everywhere, but not all dollies are created equal. One of the most important aspects of the high quality, dependable dolly is the running gear. By running gear, we are talking about the casters and wheels that enable the dolly to move. While the makers of the "super cheap" type dollies skimp on the casters to drastically reduce the selling price, some manufacturers still use quality casters and wheels. So be leary of the bargin basement priced equipment, because if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

They don't have the dolly that I need
While there are a lot of dollies out there, sometimes you need that something special. There are companies that specialize in making custom engineered dollies to meet your exact specifications. The value that these types of dollies offer the customer are emense. Since they are custom designed, they will be the right size, the right capacity, and will interact with the load in a specific manner.
When dealing with a manufacturer of customed built material handling equipment, communication is paramount. You want to make sure that you are both on the same page, before they manufacture special equipment for you. One way is to request an approval drawing to sign off on, to ensure fit and function. Along with approval drawings, computer generated renderings are sometimes warranted. Like the old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words". In other instances though a sample may make sense, so that you can see, touch and try it out.
