How To Copy DVD To Computer Hard drive Without Software For Free In Windows

Updated on September 9, 2016

How To Copy A DVD To My Computer

This article will show you how to copy a Dvd to your computer for free and also how to later watch it on that computer. If you use this method to copy DVD to computer, you can also burn the movie onto another DVD later without much modification. You can visit here to learn how to burn the movies to DVD. But first how to copy a DVD to my computer.

Step 1. Insert the Dvd you want to rip or copy to your computer's Hard drive.

Step 1.5. Go to Start -> My computer. Right click the DVD drive which you inserted you DVD and select properties from the drop down menu. A new window will open. What we want from this window is the 'Used Space' (Size of DVD). Check to make sure that you hard drive has enough free space to hold the DVD (more than the 'Used Space').

Step 2. If you have your computer set to auto play (when you enter a DVD/CD/Flash drive etc, a window pops up) go to the step 3 and skip step 4 and continue from step 5. If auto play is not enabled, skip step 3 and go to step 4 and continue to step 5.

Step 3. Select 'Open to view folders using windows explorer ' when the auto play window pops up (scroll down to the bottom of the pop up to find this option). When you select this, it will show you the files located on the DVD.

Step 4. Go to Start -> My Computer. Right click the drive in which you inserted the DVD. Then select 'Explore'. This will show you the files located on the DVD.

NB. Enable auto play by right clicking the DVD drive and selecting 'auto play'.

Step 5. When you are exploring the DVD you should see two folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.

Step 6. Drag or copy and paste these two folders to where you want to store the DVD on you hard drive. It might take a while to transfer.

That is how to store DVD files on a computer, read below to learn how to watch it.

How to watch the copied DVD

Step 1. Open the VIDEO_TS folder.

Step 2. Double click a file name VIDEO_TS in that folder. There is sometimes two of them but only one will show the DVD. Try both if the first one does not work.

The same software which you used to watch DVDs that were inserted into you drive will now open to play the file.

If you did not install any DVD watching software, download Win DVD or VLC. VLC is the best in my opinion.

As you can see there is no need to buy any special software as many people might encourage you to do to copy DVDs to your computer. Follow these step and you will be viewing DVDs on your computer with ease and without quality loss since we did no video conversions.

So until later HAPPY VIEWING!

Just a heads up. Anyone trying this in windows 10 may be a little confused, because we don't have the 'explore' option. You have to follow the instructions exactly except you need to click 'open' rather than 'explore'. Works exactly the same otherwise.

Thanks for this article! Was a huge help!

Could you confirm that the original is not playing in this way. If not try deleting and recopying the dvd files to your computer.

Yes you can. If you copied the entire VIDEOS_TS folder and AUDIO_TS folder then just burn those two to a dvd. If not create those two folders and put the copied video files in the VIDEO_TS folder then burn along with the AUDIO_TS folder.

Yes you can drag it to a folder but make sure you copy all of the files you copied from the dvd. About sending it to your sis via skype I believe this would be possible. The only problem might be your file size in terms of uploading time and if skype supports a file of that size. If it does not send then you can try converting it to a more compressed format using some free software. Actually this might be the better alternative if your are not too worried about quality.

Okay, so it copied the folders(DVD) into the folder I requested but when I went to play the first of 2 files, the first one had no video and the sound was clear, and the second video had messed up video and terribly scratchy sound... Why? and How do you/can you fix this.

Ok. You can burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS that you will would have copied from a dvd directly onto another one, and it will play in your dvd player.

Now, in terms of putting it onto your ipod I am not sure exactly how it is done but the dvd would have to be converted into an ipod video format I suppose. Then sent to your player.

For your first question yes it will work on your computer and if you reburn the files you copied from the Dvd it will also show on your player. Finally you can copy it to your Ipod if you could copy the actual DVD to your ipod, because they are the same thing though ripping may be required.

Nice information. Many people are really curious to copy DVDs on their hard drives. But this is only possible when you have excessive disk space. Like one normal hard drive is about 4.7 GB. So when you are planning to copy that hard drive then it means you much have that space on your hard drive. Same the case with High Definition DVDs and BlueRays, High Definition DVDs normally occupies 8.5 GB of space and BlueRays can occupy about 20GB of space.

If you want to copy video or audio DVD on your system then its better to RIP them first. Ripping is basically a process in which DVD is copied to hard drive in some other format which occupies very less space. Like DivX Rippers only creates file of 700MB from 4.7 GB DVD or even from BlueRay Disks.

Same the case is with Audio format DVDs, you can download rippers from internet. There are many sites like download.com, softpedia.com or filehippo.com which are offering trial based softwares or free based software. So this should be considered first.

Thanks for sharing such information. We are here to provide the best details and the explanations to our audience so that they get the right information.

      Keep it up. Thanks again.

      Best Regards
