How To Choose An Appropriate LinkedIn Profile Photo

Updated on July 31, 2014

Choosing an appropriate photo to use for your personal LinkedIn profile, one of the key essentials, is a decision that you need to make with a view to professionalism.

The photo you promote yourself with on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest is not likely to be appropriate.

Here are some essential tips to consider when selecting a photo of yourself.

How to choose a LinkedIn Photo

Size: The optimum photo should be 200 x 200 pixels at a minimum and 500 x 500 pixels maximum. LinkedIn restricts images greater than 4MB maximum. If you need to alter your image dimensions, use online photo editing sites such as PicMonkey.

Shape: Your photo should be square.

Type: You can upload JPG, GIF or PNG files for your photo.

Recent Photo: Do not use an old photo which depicts you with a beard (if you no longer have one), long curly hair (if you now sport a short cropped look), or without glasses (if they now grace your face permanently).

Make Sure It Is You: Remember this is a profile page promoting you. Not your car or pet. You.

Clear and Friendly: You may not want to smile in your profile photo, but make sure that your image is inviting and friendly.

Not Blurry. Make sure you use a photo that isn't blurry or shows you from a distance or far away. If possible, try and shrink a large photo instead of trying to enlarge a small photo to avoid pixelation.

Professional or Not: There is no need to go to the expense of getting a professional photograph taken but make sure that it is smart and not a revealing glamour shot or party photo.

Background: Try to keep the background simple and avoid bright distracting colors.

Be Alone: Where possible try to have a photograph taken of you on your own. If you do need to crop an existing photo make sure that it is a clean crop that does not retain any reference to others in the shot.

Multiple Photos: If you are not sure which photo to select, ask others for their opinion of the most approachable one.

What To Wear: Given that most photos are head shots with a snippet of your torso, the main tip here is to wear comfortable clothing that is not loud or covered in the advertising of other brands.

Hair: Unkept or brightly colored hair is a no-no, unless that is your style. Remember, recent photos, not ones taken during a phase.

Eyes To The Camera: Although you may prefer taking candid shots with friends, it's best to be looking straight at the camera for this profile image.
