How To Find Old Inbox Messages On Facebook

Updated on July 30, 2014

Ever wanted to find an old piece of information your friend sent you a few years ago?

Or double check how good you memory is about who said what?

With the setup of Facebook inbox messages, it can be difficult scrolling back through hundreds or thousands of messages with friends to find one single message.

Luckily, Facebook makes it fairly easy if you have an idea what you're looking for. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Go into your main inbox page (click on your messages icon and click "see all")
  • In the search box at the top left, type in a relevant word or two, such as "cats" or "phone number"

Note: If you're searching for a message from a friend with whom you've exchanged hundreds or thousands of messages, it can take a little time to load all results.

  • Facebook will first search for people whose names contain your search terms. At the bottom of any people it finds, is a box which says "Search Messages: Showing results for name [words]". Click this box.
  • In the message box on the right hand side will appear a list of every message you or your friends have sent that contains your chosen word.
  • Click a message to see it in context. You can use the arrows at the top of each message to navigate between instances of the word.
