How To Get Constant Traffic From Your Blog Following

Updated on May 21, 2014

Getting enough traffic to your blog can determine whether it's a success or not.

Most people concentrate on continuously trying to find high numbers of new readers and at least partially neglect their current fans. Whilst it is good to welcome new eyes, you can find it easier and more rewarding to have a smaller, more loyal fan base

The 1000 true fans theory states that any person in a creative subject can make a full time living if they have one-thousand completely loyal followers.

So here is a run down of some simple things you can do to nurture your relationship with current followers and bring constant, steady traffic to your blog...

Encourage Followers To Keeps Reading

So you have a fan who read an article and left you a comment saying how much they enjoyed it, what now? Chances are they will go on to another site to continue their Internet adventures.

Show readers you have more than one great post on your blog and encourage them to read more.

  • Use Smart Links. These are links that don't show the page URL, but rather are part of a sentence linking to another related post.
  • Show Related Posts. You can place thumbnails of posts that relate to each other at the bottom of each article. This gives readers an instant visual notification of what else is on your blog. The simplest and quickest way to do this is with LinkWithin.
  • Write A Series. Consider splitting one post topic into a series of posts, going into more depth on each point. This has the advantage of being able to link the posts together and keeps your audience wanting more.

How To Add A Follow By Email Box To Blogspot

Feedburner delivers your blog posts direct to your readers email.

To add a subscription box on a Blogspot Blog:

  • Go to 'Layout'
  • Click 'Add A Gadget' in the sidebar
  • Choose 'Follow By Email'
  • Choose your title and enter your blogs feed address*
  • Click Save

*Blogger should automatically generate a feedburner address for you, but if you have any problems check out the Feedburner help section.

Remind Blog Readers You Exist

Now I'm going to tell you to do something that is a little controversial here. DON'T put a box in your blog sidebar for people to follow you, or add your site to an RSS reader. This may sound bizarre but there is a method in my madness.

When people click to follow your blog, chances are they will forget about you. We've all done it; you like a blog, you click to follow promising yourself to check it regularly and then forget it's there. You end up collecting a long list of links and not reading many (if any) of them.

You want to remind your readers you are there and how fabulous you are! In today's busy world you cannot rely on people remembering you, no matter how good you are.

Limit readers choices, encourage them to follow you on social networks and sign up to get your latest posts to their email.

Newsletter subscriptions are a popular choice, particularly for Internet Marketers. Offering a free newsletter is effective and can be highly profitable. If like me you find you never get around to actually writing the newsletters there's not much point. I prefer to ask fans to follow me by email through Feedburner. This way your latest posts get delivered straight to their inbox, with no extra effort on your part. Readers will click your smartlinks in their email and be taken to your actual blog.

Write Evergreen Content

What is Evergreen Content? It is articles that are relevant to readers throughout time and will not go out of date. Trendy topics are good for quick traffic but they will not help you in the long run.

Write posts that will be interesting, informative and entertaining for years to come. Readers will remember it and will often go back to it for reference and share them with their friends.

Don't be afraid to give out free information and advice. Good quality, genuine posts that give something to the reader will encourage them to stay longer and look around your blog. They will also be more likely to sign up to your email list, social media pages and buy from you!

Build a relationship with your readers and become invaluable to them. Give them a space full of useful posts and pay attention to what they say. People will be finding your articles in search engines for years to come, don't disappoint them by giving them results that are out of date and no longer relevant.

Interesting and helpful. I have a blog and have been trying to be more active on it with minimal success. Thanks for this.
