How To SEO - Best Step by Step On-Page Optimization Methods

Updated on April 4, 2012

On-Page Optimization - Hubpages Example

It isn't hard to assume that you are here to learn about on-page optimization. Well, I can tell you, you have come to the best place! In this how to seo article, I can not think of a better example than using this very hubpage to show you how optimize your webpage.

Hubpages are at the fore-front of on-page optimization and you don't have to do anything - it is already here! Sub-domains or independent web pages with great content should win through. Here at HubPages, your articles are given a head start so as they can be their best.

Here you are already set up to optimize articles and product pages in a user-friendly way. Good page ranking - or search engine result page (SERP) - attracts traffic and, therefore, benefits the writer and Hubpages! Whether you write on Hubpages, or you have a website that you wish to optimize, then this page is for you!

How To SEO A-Store

My A-Store is cram-packed full of great specialist information and products especially picked and recommended by me to you!

Why not treat yourself to a better SEO understanding by clicking:

Optimizing Space For Google Adsense

Hubpages have developed a well thought strategy by offering an automated system of well positioned space allocations for optimizing Google Adsense. These are advertisements that advertisers pay for on a pay per click basis and have also been optimized so as the adverts match the article content. It is within the interest of this site to ensure the best possible chance of clicks by providing an on-page optimization experience that is user-friendly for both the novice and professional writer. By optimizing Google Adsense in the correct position, ensures a greater chance for readers to click on relevant ads and, therefore, purchase a relevant service or item.

On-Page Optimization Allowing Optimum Google Adsense

Optimizing Your Page By Targeting Readers With Adsense

The above picture demonstrates how to optimize the top part of the page.

  • Do not put any pictures, media or video's on the top spot, if you want to target the Google adsense market. Leave these to the lower sections. Hubpages has helped you to optimize ads for your article and display is the key to success.
  • Ensure that you have the first paragraph long enough to trigger the adsense box as an indentation into this. If it is too short, the box will not appear here.
  • Try and write a short second paragraph. Without a picture, some adsense ads will appear beneath paragraph 2.
  • Ensure that you place your long tailed keywords (in this instance - 'on-page optimization' and 'how to seo' in the first paragraph. Follow throughout the article with these as a sprinkling - you can have a variation on the theme, for example 'optimizing pages' - this counts!

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

Optimizing Your page Targeting Readers With Products

In my example of targeting readers with products, I am using my Amazon A-Store example. As you will see in the picture, I have placed my World of Autism A-Store near the top. This has not effected targeting potential Adsense clickers.

Look at how I have taken advantage of the placement of my advertisement in a prime place without compromising my adsense advertisments! If you are looking to on-page optimization for your independant website, it might be a good idea to have your product picture here, or above, should you not be targeting adsense ads. This is because it positioned in a manner that the reader's eye will be attracted to.

To access and change this from Hubpages:

  • Go to Edit mode
  • Click on Summary Text Capsule
  • Change this and Optimize - if you want - so as potential readers are teased into clicking on your link!

On-Page Optimization and Meta Descriptions

The first paragraph of your article, or product advertisment, should contain your main keywords and short tail keywords. You need to make this snappy as this is where the search engine will provide a snap shot of your web page when people search for your keyword.

Hubpages have already thought about this for you, but if you are optimizing your web page, it is important that you do this manually. Again, this needs to be a keyword rich meta description. It is a piece of html code that looks like this:

<meta name= "Description" content= "Place here what you want to describe for your web page, ensure your keywords are contained here, using your primary keyword first, followed by the secondary and, perhaps, the third - this is approximately 60 words long.">

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

  • For independant website optimization, use the <h1>tag for your headline, and include your keywords.  Try and keep your headings in bold or itallics - search engines see bold as an important contribution to the content.
  • Hubpages has already done thes for you, so you don't have to worry about it!

On-Page Optimization :: Keyword Rich :: Heading

As opposed to magazine article writing, you don't need a 'snappy little title' to get noticed. To optimize your web page, you need boring old, well defined keywords. These are the words that people would search for - just to arrive at a product page or article like yours!

Search engines want to please their users by providing content that is appropriate to what they are searching for. Keep the content and heading, therefore, appropriate. It looks boring but people will be searching that content!

Example of SERPS And How On Page Optimization Has Produced The Right Result

  • Hubpages has this aspect covered before you start to write your article.
  • If you are starting your own independent page, keep your keywords in mind before purchasing a domain name.

Optimize The URL

If you take a look at the above picture, you will see that on my autism article, 'Autistic Spectrum Disorder', 'Aspergers Syndrome' and 'Brain Scan Diagnoses Autism' appears in the boring title heading and in the URL.

When a search engine sees that these match, it is believed to give the article a higher value. It is important to understand, however, that Google likes keywords to be integrated into the URL, but the title should sound like it would do in an article format. Such on-page search engine optimization techniques benefits from this strategy. If you are developing a webpage, therefore, it is worth keeping this in mind.

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

Tags That Help to Optimize Your Website

Tags don't have a lot of search engine optimization value but they do help organise your page within a site.  These need to be relevant - so think about terms people use specifically when looking for your page.

In learning how to seo, it is imperative that you know what your target market is thinking and searching for. If you take a look at the picture to the side, I have added specific terms that suits the article concerned - it is to do with autism.

Try and find niche terms and, as with a site like the one you are looking at at the moment, you might even find decent backlinks for people searching the site.  These tags help create a forever changing tag cloud - something that you might consider allocating similar terms with your own website or page.

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

Commenting is great for SEO!
Commenting is great for SEO!

How To SEO Is Not About Bad Spelling

  • Search engines do not like spelling mistakes. When configuring your position in the page ranking, this will be a deduction. Such deductions do not help your on-page optimization. How to seo is not about bad spelling so... Make sure your spelling is correct!
  • Hubpages has an inbuilt spell checker - use it!
  • For website page creators - spell check before uploading..

On-Page Optimization of Links

Search engines are seeking good quality content that is regularly updated. This is particularly beneficial with the addition of rss feeds when attempting to optimize your web page. However, it is important to make sure that these are relevant to the page content. For example, if you have embedded links that refers strictly to the subject SEO, this is fine. If links cover a variety of topics, this is a no no!

The spider bots sense movement in your page and know whether you have relevant quality content in your links and your articles. This helps them grade your article in search engines, thereby providing a ranking.

The more valuable content - the better. The more relevance to your article - the better.

On-Page Optimization: Do What The Big Boys Do

Adding relevant articles helps, not only provide an additional SEO value, but encourages readers to click on other articles or products. Amazon are particularly good at this, for example. When a customer searches for an item, they will provide links to similar products - possibly with special offers as a way to entice the customer to buy more.

In on-page optimization for your products, services or articles, it is a good idea to do the same. Just do what the big boys are doing!

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

On-page optimization of links and media - Notice the irrelevant 'hot articles' RSS Feed? This will award a Google SERPs penalty! Don't do it!
On-page optimization of links and media - Notice the irrelevant 'hot articles' RSS Feed? This will award a Google SERPs penalty! Don't do it!

Media Content Helps To Optimize Your Web Page!

Notice the media insert from YouTube? This adds to great content, keeps the reader on-page and, ultimately, appeases the search engines. Remember, Google - the biggest and the search engine that many other search engines leaches off for information - loves great, useful content. If the people want this, then give it to them! Google also owns YouTube, so Big Brother is watching you! Watch out for those broken links - they can provide you with a penalty!!

Reading times are monitored by Google. It provides an indication as to how good your content is. People aren't going to hang about if your content is poor, are they? So, if you place good bit of media in your page, this will help to optimize your web page.

I have seen more and more good websites provide this strategy, including one that sells oven parts! They provided a great YouTube video as to how to change an oven element! How impressive is that?! This is what your traffic should be feeling about your content too!

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

Optimize Your Page By Getting People To Share The Love

Search engines, particularly Google, like to see that people really love your content. It is not surprising that providing a share button to the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Digg It, Blogger and Google +1 helps to optimize your page for search engine optimization. The more people you can get to share your content with others on these social network sites - the better.

Google also likes to see that your content is so good that others are prepared to link to you. These are what back links are about. The more back links you have that references your page, the more Google will love you for it.

Quality backlinks for highly reputable sites are Google gold, so be very pleased with yourself, when a high page ranking web site links to you. These have to be naturally created and NOT self-serving (you placing links in other sites just to get a good page rank).

On-Page Optimization and Movement

Imagine a web that a spider has weaved. The spider awaits. Suddenly, she senses movement of her web. What could this be? Her senses can feel the vibration, so she moves as quick as she can... catch her prey! It is survival - it's in her nature!

Now, when you are looking to optimize your page for seo, you need to create a strategy of on page movement. This has to be NATURALLY induced. Your page is the web and something like a new content, links and comments are the prey that moves the page.

This trigger's the spider bot to investigate. Rather like our spider who senses movement on her web, the movement of your page, sends an internet vibration to the bot. It is this that alerts fresh, new and updated content that the search engines love so much. Let your web page be alive with movement that is of high quality.

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

How To Seo - Let Your Content Breath!

So, now you know how to seo with fresh content. Indeed, content is king, so make your page interesting. Give it lots of links - let it breath and be its own entity! Allow it to grow with comments, back links, media and interactivity. This is what search engines want and, for success, this is what you need to give. I hope you have found how I have used the ideas of on-page optimization, here at Hubpages, so as this article can be it's best. Hopefully, you will take on-board what has been achieved on this site and integrate these ideas on your web page. If you want it all done for you, why don't you join Hubpages here and have the best chance of getting onto page 1 of the Internets search engines?  And if you want more tips, scroll down to the video!

Nice hub on On-page SEO. My SEO rules have been simple. Keyword phrase in the title, H1, H2, H3, metatags, 2% density in the body, underline, bold and italicise the keyword phrase. I would also have my keyword phrase in some of the internal links. Then, i would proceed to building backlinks. There have been a lot of speculations about SEO and people have been making a lot of money selling ebooks on SEO. I feel the tips provided in this hub and some backlink building would go a long way in helping you rank for keywords, atleast low competition keywords.

Wilderness... you need to make sure that you dont overwhelm your readers with too much advertising, for example, or they will simply switch off.

And yes, if you attempt to over optimize, spamming for example, Google will downgrade you and that is not good!

Rookie - On-page optimization is something that many have worked on and, I must admit, I just didnt get it. I had to take a long time in disecting it and working a way around it, so as I could understand it. I looked at hubpages and all I learned and realised that this was the pinical of onpage optimization. Drawing upon the knowledge that I made and by anaylising hubpages, the penny dropped. I know we all learn in different ways and produced this article in the way that I understand. Hopefully everyone else will 'get it' too - especially those out there producing websites - learning for all!

Thanks for your lovely comment :)

Now that I understand, I think this is one of the best, if not THE best, pieces of writing (illustrations included) on optimizing hubs for the best possible performance. Supremely done; I'm just sorry I can't vote it up more than once!

Priceman - questions are only answers awaiting to be found. Sometimes we can not see the wood for the trees because simple concepts are made complexed with repackaging. Like the skin of an onion, we only have to peel back the layers to find the truth.

I would say that anyone charging for information like this goes against the principals of the internet in the first place. The internet was donated freely for the people to be used by the people freely.

      Glad that I have helped:)

lisabeaman - Take it in little steps and keep mindful of design. Make your hubs alive! Make them active, breathing things that has a lots of activity. This is what makes hubpages so special and something that any web or on page optimizer should aim towards.

Thanks for reading and good luck :)

Humagaia - you are absolutely correct. I see this feature as useless and in need of review. Most people are lazy and wont put themselves out to scroll up and down which is why I didnt highlight it as a benefit in this article. I am targeting this at people who have websites and used hubpages as the pinicle example of good on-page optimization technique.

Thank you for your valued comment, I hope that the team at hubpages will see your point and make the necessary adjustments. :)

John B Bad - Articles and websites need to be living, breathing things. They have to be a hive of activity and rss feeds and news feeds add to this. Content is king and google will love you if you have interesting, evolving and fresh content.

Thanks for reading and I am glad this article has helped.

Loved the spiders web analogy. Just one thing that Hubpages has not got right in my view. The placing of the [Like] etc. button. I read the article and think I liked this, so I use the buttons above the comments. I forget most times to go back up to the top of the page (which can be a lot of up- arrowing). So, this feature is often missed (in your case I made a conscious effort not to forget). It happens also when commenting. One comments and then posts and the next step is to vote up etc. But where is this now? Well out of sight, and unfortunately most times therefore, well out of mind.

Great resource and the thumbs up have been instigated.

Best of luck on the 60DC2 (60 Day Challenge to those that do not know).
