Introduction

Windows Movie Maker is native to Windows ME, XP and Vista, but is noticeably missing from Windows 7. However, don't fret if you became addicted to the free, intuitive and powerful video editing program -- it's still free and available from Microsoft as an installation option as part of the Windows Live Essentials 2011 package. The program does take some time to download and install, but the end result of getting a free, powerful and easy-to-use video editing program on your computer is worth it.

How to Install Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7

  1. Click here to navigate to the Windows Live Movie Maker download page.
  2. Click the blue "Download Now" box at the top of the page beneath "Get Movie Maker, it's free."
  3. Save the wlsetup-web.exe file to your computer.
  4. Navigate to where you saved the wlsetup-web.exe file to the computer and then double-click the file to run it. A Windows Live Essentials 2011 window appears with a Preparing to Install message along the bottom. After a short wait, the "What do you want to install?" window appears.
  5. Click "Choose the programs you want to install." The "Select programs to install" window appears.
  6. Click to check any other programs you want to install, but be certain to click to check the box to the left of Photo Gallery and Movie Maker (In the video example above this program is already installed on the machine so the program is only available to update and not to install, but the process is still the same).
  7. Click "Install" in the lower-right corner of the "Select programs to install" window. The Install Windows Live Essentials 2011 dialog box appears, displaying the progress of the installation.
  8. Click the "Close" button that appears in the dialog box after the installation is complete.
  9. Click the Windows orb on the taskbar to open the Start menu and then click "All Programs." Windows Live Movie Maker is now available in the list of programs on the left side of the Start menu.
  10. Click "Windows Live Movie Maker." The Windows Live Movie Maker program opens and is ready for use.
