How to Join a Group on Facebook
Social groups have moved online.
Facebook is a fantastic way to get to know new people and interact act with people we already know. But like many online programs and services, it can take a while to figure out what's actually going on without a little previous knowledge.
Even as a young person, I occasionally struggle to figure this stuff out, so let's learn this together!

Not sure where to even find one of these online social organizations? Use the search bar at the top of the page. You can type in anything you'd like. This is the same place you'd go to search for people, fan pages, or anything else.

Should you join a group?
Groups and fan pages are different from each other. Groups are much more specific and closed ways of communicating with others, and are good for people who want to hold very particular discussions instead of broad ones. They are also much more private.
If you believe someone you know would enjoy a group, you can give them automatic access to the group. Try avoiding this unless you know for sure the person will like the group as they will soon receive every and all notifications from the group immediately!
Keep In Mind
As noted above, groups are fantastic to staying connected. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind.
1. You'll receive a specific alert for every update.
Unlike fan pages, you won't have Facebook moderate any of the content you see. Good or bad, you'll get it all. This is wonderful for smaller groups with close connections, but can become very irritating when a heated conversation takes off in a very large and popular group!
2. You can't join a group as a separate identity, like a fan page.
If you're a business owner who wants to join a local business group, you will have to do that under your real name. This can be very frustrating since you will receive all of the updates on your personal profile and can't work as your business identity, but it can also be very good for generating strong, personal connections.
Why have groups become so popular?
In my blogger communities, I've noticed a drastic jump towards groups. Why? Well, Facebook has begun to limit the posts it shows to the average user according to whatever sort of funny math Facebook does.
This can be very frustrating since many bloggers take their fan page activities very seriously. Instead of all 500 people who Liked the page seeing the content, sometimes only a few will! It's a big pain, and making groups is one very easy way to combat this problem.
But, as listed above, groups aren't a perfect solution. Personally, I don't like being in them at all. It's too much information about too much I'm not 100% invested in. Make a group about my family on the other hand, and I'd be in immediately.
One great perk of this is the ability to create deeper social connections with brand users. Whether you're an average Facebook user or a page owner, you can now make or become a member of a brand's "tribe," which makes you and them feel like part of a special club. These relationships are crazy useful for brands, but might become frustrating and irritating for anyone not completely invested in the cause.
You'll continue to notice more groups as Facebook continues to push for people to pay for their page activities. Many smaller scale page owners are unable or uninterested in paying for people to see what they write, and they'll slowly begin to transition into a much more reliable and less moderated form such as the group format.
They're easy to find, easy to join, and easy to use. Just be aware of what they are and why they exist and everyone will be happy. Everyone!
