How to Display Large Photos in Craigslist Classified Ads

Updated on February 7, 2012

Craigslist.org is a great website to place free online classified advertisements. But craigslist forces all the photos and images to a small, 300 x 225 size. The purpose of this page is to show you an easy way to ‘make’ craigslist display large photos and images ‘full-size’ in your online classified ads.

Craigslist is a centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements – with jobs, internships, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community, gigs, résumés, and pets categories – and forums on various topics. Alexa Ranking: On February 23, 2009, Craigslist.org had a traffic rank of 10 for the United States. (UPDATE: February 7, 2012, rank of 9 for the US)

I use craigslist.org to buy and sell items for household or personal items. For most ads, it is best to have one or more photos included. But craigslist will automatically reduce the size of the photos to 300 x 225. Sometimes that is a large enough photo to show the item. But sometimes I really want a larger photo, like 1024 x 768.

Craigslist ad with 300 x 225 photo

Example: Selling some old LP record albums:

I wanted to sell some old LP albums. I spread 16 LP record albums on the deck and took a photo. At 300 x 225, the photo is too small to be able to clearly read the album covers. If I create an ad using the reduced size of the photo, I must list all 16 titles of the albums, like The Byrds Greatest Hits, Donovan’s Greatest Hits, Best of Bee Gees, The Association Greatest Hits, The Mamas & the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Ventures play Telstar, etc. – a lot of typing!

To the right is the craigslist ad with the small photo.

But at 1024 x 768, the photo should be large enough for the viewer to read the titles - no need to write out the 16 titles in the ad text.

Note:

Since craigslist saves only the smaller photo, and the larger photo is still on the user’s hardfile, then we need to put the larger photo on the web. Although there are several photo websites, photobucket.com (Alexa Ranking: On February 23, 2009, Photobucket.com had a traffic rank of 17 for the United States.) makes it easy to get the HTML code to insert into craigslist. Actually, I found a few craigslist ads with large photos, and when I viewed the source code, they all pointed to photobucket.com. And when I clicked the large photo on craigslist, it took me to the photobucket.com web page showing that photo, and the following message:

Welcome message from Photobucket

"But, I don't see the importance of using Google to find a Craigslist ad, when I can use Craigslist to search Craigslist ads."

By being vague, you're not making things easier for people using Craigslist's search engine as well. With a nondescript listing, you're reducing the chance of a potential buyer from seeing/finding your goods.

      Hi bad batkin,

I wasn't able to sell the LP, so I gave them to Goodwill. It's been years since I had a turntable. I wished I had kept the album covers and used them as wall decoration.

BUT, I was downsizing and "things" had to go!

I had a bit of trouble with my first attempt because I did not follow the directions correctly. However in doing so I may have stumbled upon the solution to the link being displayed instead of the photo. I pasted the picture in first and then the ad text because I wanted it that way. Sure enough the ad showed a link. I repeated the attempt to be sure, with the same result. I went back to your hub and thoroughly read the instructions instead of skimming and sure enough, you had said paste the photo AFTER the ad text. I did and voila, we now have a perfect very large photo in the ad. Thank you so much for this hub and I hope my comment helps someone down the line.

It works great! In the final stages of posting there is an icon of photobucket, not the actual image. But when you actually look at the ad in craigslist the images will show up in all their glory.

Thanks for the great info!! Just wanted to share something that I found handy. I searched for a photobucket app for my iPhone and found one. Now I can upload my pics quickly to the photobucket app and do the home button double tap back and forth between my photobucket app and my craigslist app copying and pasting the html's and never lose my place and create ads quickly. Hope this brings some posting ease to many.

      Karen,

      Please try the following:

      1. Does the picture display on a different computer, or different internet browser (IE, Firefox, etc.)? If it fails on other computers or browsers, then maybe Craigslist has a problem.

      2. Do most of the Craigslist ads with pictures work OK? If none of the pictures display on your computer, but the pictures display on a different computer, then something could be wrong with your computer.

Hopefully, trying other computers, browsers, and other Craigslist ads will give you a clue to what is wrong.

      Hope you solve the mystery.

I was informed that any links to Photobucket or any photo hosting site are prohibted on Craigslist. I don't understand because I still run into ads that use links to Photobucket, but my ad was flagged and de-listed. The Craigslist reason was that html links to larger photos affected mobile performance to CL.

I must admit, getting a straight answer why my ad was de-listed took a while and I had to sift through a lot of sarcasm to get a straight answer.

      Boogie,

Using HTML code to display large pictures works for most people. I have only received a couple comments where they could not get it to work. Recently I have seen some ads with large photos, so it's still happening. Maybe Craigslist flags ads which abuse using "overly" large pictures or use html wrong. (only a guess)

    • profile image

      Boogie 6 years ago

I read all craigs list problems and one is overly sized pictures will get you flagged. Also they say they say html code will get you flagged too so I'm wondering is this working for all of you? I'm getting ready to start listing on craigs list and read everything and I don't want flagged by using this method.

Thanks for ALL the great Comments that I have received. Since I first published this page, in 02/09, it has been my most highly viewed page. Initially, I thought that the search engines would not find it because it might require too many "specific" keywords to be entered, and "would" people know such a web page "actually existed".

Initially, views were slow. But by using some features that Hubpages have, like "Tags" or "Suggested Tags", views started to grow and grow.

I also realized that this subject matter will not be a money maker, but I enjoyed the challenge of designing a "near" perfect hubpage. :) Also, I have tried to reply to comments that actually required me to "recreate" the "Step by Step" Procedures. I have found no errors in my procedures since I initially wrote.

Why such a long comment from me? - because of ALL the genuine "Thank you SO MUCH!!" comments.

Hi, my pixel width dimensions are all the same when I upload into photobucket. However my HEIGHTS are all different. That is what I want. It seems that if you have a very long image in height, that craigslist or photobucket will lessen the width in order to show more of the image.

How can I conserve the width and just make it so people will have to scroll down to see the rest of the height???

      Thanks,

Can someone help me. First off, this is the best tip and thanks. Second, when I do this, (say I have different paragraphs in my posting) it pushes all of my words into one huge paragraph. I want it like this:

      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

      xxxxxxxxxxxxx

      xxxxxxxxxxxxx

When I do it step by step, it makes my add look like this:

      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

      Pictures:

      Pictures:

      Pictures:

      ------------------------------------------------------

Anyone know why it is doing this or how to stop it from doing it? If I use the first html code (small pictures that are click-able), the add looks fine except the pictures are small. Thanks

      Bonnie, Randy, and Melinda:

I tried it again, and it works for me. The HTML code now uses "href" instead of "ref" - but I tried both of them and they both worked.

Also, I think things have changed in craigslist since I first wrote this article - about 1.5 years ago. Before I had to create and Save the Ad, then come back to edit to insert the HTML from Photobucket. This time I did Photobucket first and copied the HTML to a text file. Then I created a craigslist ad, inserted the HTML, then saved. It worked this way too.

If anyone has any ideas why it won't work for some people, let me know.

      Jim,

I'm not sure why a lot of customers can't see the ad. They do not need to do anything on their computers to make it work. Basically all that you are doing is inserting some basic HTML code. One suggesting I have is for you to log on to another computer and see if you can see the photos. If you cannot see the photos, then something must be wrong with the HTML code. HTML code is not very forgiving - if anything is not in the right place or missing, then the results won't be right.

      I hope this helps.

      Gail,

Sorry but I did not follow through on how to put a flyer on Craigslist. I actually created a flyer for my townhouse that I was selling - and I put the flyer on Craigslist. But I didn't want to use my townhouse as the example for Hubpages. The townhouse sold 3 months later and I got busy with all the closing/moving details.

I think there are several flyer websites. I used vflyer.com - where I think I could have 1 or 2 free flyers. There are lots of types of flyers - real estate, vehicles, furniture, etc. Once the flyer is created, the website shows you how to put on Craigslist.

      I hope that helps.

      josh,

Yes it is important to have the text of the items for sale - even Craigslist needs that. But, I don't see the importance of using Google to find a Craigslist ad, when I can use Craigslist to search Craigslist ads. Also, I use Amazon to search Amazon items and Ebay to search Ebay items.

    • profile image

      Josh Zytkiewicz 7 years ago

While the larger photo is good, I would also put in the text of the items you're selling. Anyone doing an internet search will not see your ad because Google can not read the titles in a picture.

Mike, it's been a while since I was testing this out. But I have seen it work both ways - with photo only and with a photo that is also a link to the photobucket.com website.

In step 6 above, if you delete the "a ref= ... " HTML code, and keep the "img src= ... " code, that will get rid of the address link to photobucket. Similar way if using Flickr.

That way, only the photo should display and it will not be a hyperlink to a website.

      Hope that works for you.

Good Hub, I also use Photobucket, but mainly use Picasaweb.google.com so I add big images. I sell cars sometimes online, more big photos help. I have Picasa desktop software, I capture photos and transfer it to Picasa, which transfers it to the web in seconds.

This is an excellent way to get more attention to what you are trying to sell. Thanks for the tip!

Bee - I also used vflyer.com to create a graphical flyer for a townhouse I was selling, and vflyer.com gives instructions on how to insert into craigslist. Vflyer allows 2 free flyers to be active at one time. I did this about 3 months ago - so I don't know if craigslist is blocking it now.

I have done this very thing because I saw other Craigslist members doing it. I have a website where I put up the photos, uploaded the photos to the main directory of the website, then just linked with the html image tag in my ad. But now they wont let me post it. It got flagged 3 times already! And it happens right when it gets posted. Sooo annoying. All I am doing is selling a car, I see other dealerships putting up huge photos, and they never get taken down! Starting to hate Craigslist..

      dawei888,

Any photo website will work. I think most of them provide the html code now.

Very useful - I never would have thought of using photobucket. I'm wondering if this works for Flickr and Picasa as well. Thanks!
