How to Make Your Facebook Status Updates More Exciting

Enthrall Everyone on Your Friend List!

Facebook is a great way to stay connected with family and friends. It is also a good way to see what former friends (and enemies) have been up to if you haven't seen them in years. Plenty of people use Facebook to post photos, share links, and play games. I think because of all this other activity, many people are losing sight of the most important aspect of Facebook - status updates! You should be using Facebook not just to stay in touch with your friends, but to entertain them.

That's right! If you aren't using Facebook to keep your wacky friends and relatives amused, then what is the point? You should be striving to write exciting Facebook status updates each day. When you wake up in the morning, these are the events that should take place: bathroom, coffee, cereal, maybe bathroom again, then Facebook status update time. If you aren't planning your entire morning around your Facebook status update, then you might just need to reconsider your priorities, my friend!

I hate to say this, but some people are posting status updates on Facebook that are snooze-o-rama! It's a big borefest sometimes when I scroll through my news feed. I don't want to hear about waiting in line at Target unless you happened to see Elvis standing beside you. I don't care about the weather unless it is over 100 degrees or under 0 degrees. Give me something exciting! After all, what else is everyone supposed to do at work all day? Reading and writing interesting Facebook status updates is the way to really kill some time each day.

Obviously, some people need some pointers on creating the most high-quality, fascinating Facebook status updates out there. As usual, I am would like to offer my assistance with a few tips. If you need some pointers on writing the most exciting Twitter tweets, you can just apply the same advice I am giving you here about Facebook. Who has time to write two hubs about this topic anyway? I am too busy posting status updates on Facebook!

1. Make Stuff Up

Yes, I said it. Just lie to your audience. I am not saying you should become a pathological liar on Facebook or anything, although I know some people that fall into that category. Make up something that is a blatantly obvious lie. People can't be angry with you if you are just having fun.

Instead of announcing you just had Frosted Flakes for breakfast (boring!), let your audience (I mean, friends) know you just had breakfast with Tony the Tiger. They will know you did not have breakfast with Tony, but they will be entertained anyway.

2. Don't Post the Same Thing All the Time

Sometimes you have a great concept for a Facebook status update, but you use the same idea over and over again. For instance, hearing updates about your boss's rants each day can be really fun until everyone reads the same thing each day. First of all, your boss is obviously a psycho; perhaps you should devote an entire blog to those rants instead. Second, we want to read a little variety on your page every now and then.

I love quoting lyrics from Kings of Leon's songs or from Katy Perry's songs as much as the next person, but day after day of that gets boring. Can't you come up with some of your own material at this point? The only exception to this rule is if you are actually Katy Perry or if you are a band member in Kings of Leon. For that matter, if you are in Kings of Leon and reading this right now, can we be friends on Facebook? If not, I would still be happy to give you my phone number....

3. Write Something Funny

If all else fails, just write something funny. If you can't think of anything funny, you can always search online for funny Facebook status updates. Seriously, about a million (OK, that might be an exaggeration) will come up. Some won't be funny, but some actually might be pretty good.

You could even just mention ridiculous emails you receive and quote them as if they are actually true. A good example: "Good news! I am about to inherit $1,298,012 from an uncle in Bangladesh I never knew existed. I just need to send all my personal info to some random guy. This totally sounds legit." What a hilarious Facebook status update!

4. Put a Creative Twist on the Truth

Very few of us are living super exciting lives every single day. Even celebrities have days when they just go to the grocery store and buy milk. But you can't put that kind of garbage on your Facebook page. Instead, find some other mundane task and make it interesting.

For example, if you took your cat to the vet and Mr. Whiskers didn't like it, don't post: "Mr. Whiskers is cranky from visiting the vet." That is just too dull to keep everyone on your friend list entertained. You can post this instead: "It's a good thing Mr. Whisker's didn't claw out the vet's eyes today. He sure hates going to the vet." Oh, that is full of excitement! Sure Mr. Whiskers wouldn't claw anyone's eyes out. But it does sound interesting!

5. Find Something Interesting

OK, so maybe you don't feel like embellishing the truth. Perhaps you don't want to share any interesting song lyrics or steal someone else's funny status updates. You want to be your own creative genius behind your status update and you want it to be exciting. Well, you are going to have to create your own excitement.

Why not go for a walk or make some calls or even just roam around your home? Sometimes the most fascinating events can occur when you least expect it. For instance, recently my friend was bitten on the foot by mouse while at work. Well, how often does that happen? Do you think it became a Facebook status update? You bet! Do you think people were interested in reading it? Of course! Share those strange moments in life.

Let's face it, truth is stranger than fiction anyday. I am sure if you keep looking, you will find something interesting to share as a Facebook status update or a Twitter tweet. If not, just post "truth is stranger than fiction." It is true and that is not boring unless you post it everyday. A little mystery in your status update always makes for a good post anyway.

Don't worry. If your status updates are not too thrilling, it probably means you've got too much way cooler stuff going on in your life. :-)

Entourage 007 - That is so true. A nice photo always helps a status update, too. This is especially the case if someone goes on a nice vacation. It is almost like you are there with them. Thanks for the comment!

josh3418 - I am happy you enjoyed the hub. We do seem to be on the same wavelength a lot on HubPages. Thanks for checking out my hub!

TToomsbso8 - I am glad I could inspire you with my hub. :-) Now, if I only listen to my own advice and actually write some interesting updates on Facebook, I would be good.

billybuc - Thanks so much! I would love to work for Facebook. I would try to make it more like MySpace, which would make me really happy. :-)
