Updated on August 15, 2012

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is like many other powerful programs, it is very easy to install, but if you want to uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage, especially if you want a totally clean WGA removal, it is not so simple, because it always leaves some traces in the corner of the computer Registry and hard drive. If you are looking for a way to completely remove the whole program of WGA, then follow me.

Besides, if you think you are not skillful enough to conduct this WGA removal, I will also list the best Windows Genuine Advantage Uninstaller at the end of my article. So just follow me here:

Manually remove Windows Genuine Advantage Notification approach one:

Step 1 Log on the computer by using an account that has administrative permissions. If not so, you are not allowed to remove WGA.

Step 2 Make sure that the WGA Notifications version on your computer is a pilot version.

(The format for the pilot version is 1.5.0532.x. In this case, you can uninstall versions 527-532 only. For example, you can uninstall versions that range from 1.5.0527.0 to 1.5.0532.)

Follow these steps to find the WGA Notifications version:

a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
b. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, find out and select Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications, and then click it for support information.
(Note If Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications does not appear, it means that the one you installed is a release version, and in this case you cannot uninstall this program.)
c. Verify the version number in the Support Info dialog box, after that click Close.

Step 3 Rename the following files by changing the extension to .old:• Rename %Windir%\system32\WgaLogon.dll to %Windir%\system32\WgaLogon.old
Rename %Windir%\system32\WgaTray.exe to %Windir%\system32\WgaTray.old

Step 4 Restart your computer.

Step 5 Unregister LegitCheckControl.dll by using Regsvr32.

To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
Regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll /u

Step 6 Restart the computer.

Step 7 Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Step 8 At the command prompt, delete the following files by typing the Del command. Press ENTER after you type each command.

Del %Windir%\system32\wgalogon.old
Del %Windir%\system32\WgaTray.old
Del %Windir%\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll

Step 9 At the command prompt, type regedit.

Step 10 Locate and then right-click the following registry subkeys. Click Delete after you locate each subkey.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon

Manually remove Windows Genuine Advantage Notification approach Two:

Step 1 Click the Start Menu and select Run.

Step 2 Type system32 and click Ok. Go to Tools and then go to Folder Options and hit the View button.

Step 3 Click on Check which is beside Hide extensions for known file types. In this way, you can uncheck.

Step 4 Find WgaLogon.dll and you have to rename it with another extension. To do this, you should add a “1” after WgaLogon. If a warning pops up for changing the name, click on Yes.

Step 5 Find and delete the WgaTray.exe file that's in the System32. Once the file has been deleted, go straight to the Processes tab and highlight WgaTray.exe and click on End Process.

Step 6 Go back to System32 and delete the WgaLogon.dll application. Then you got to change the name back to the original name.

After I list the instructions to uninstall Windows Genuine Advantage that is so long, do you still think about uninstall it by yourself? If you are a computer geek who live and breathe the computer, go ahead, but if you are only a normal PC user with limited computer knowledge like many people, you’d better not do this, because if so wrong during these processes, you may make the problem even worse. Then try the effective way below:
