How can you protect your computer from viruses

As an IT specialist people always ask me the same question how to protect my computer from hackers and viruses. Nowadays computer has become an integral part of daily living. Computer hacking is the process of software or hardware modification maliciously. It actually hinders your normal computer activities like steal your personal data, slow down your computer and create unnecessary folders. By taking precautions and following few steps you can save your valuable data from hackers. Since the number of hackers is increasing day by day, you can try the following steps to safeguard your computer from hackers and viruses.

Use Antivirus Software
Antivirus software are the most useful tool to protect your PC from hackers and viruses. Since new viruses emerge every day, so it’s necessary to update your antivirus regularly. It is a good practice to run virus update once in a week. You can run quick virus scan for your computer daily. Before opening your removable disk, always make sure to check disk with antivirus software. You can check several free antivirus software which are completely automated. Here are some useful ones to protect you from hacking and viruses: Avast Antivirus, AVG Antivirus and Kaspersky Antivirus.

Turn On Firewall
A Firewall is a system located at the network to prevent unauthorized access to your private network. Firewalls are either hardware or software or it may be a combination of both. Firewalls help filter both incoming and outgoing data streams. When you are working in windows XP, make sure your windows firewall is turned on. Firewalls protect your computer from offensive websites. It is better to install both hardware and software firewall to protect your computer from potential hackers.

Don’t save your Personal data
whenever you Log in your email account, don’t save your password or other information in your browser. Some hacking software or viruses can get your personal data from browsers. Moreover, do not sign up in any website without knowing their services properly. Always use different email accounts for professional and personal purpose.

Be careful whenever you download
Do not download anything from unknown websites. You may be affected by any virus from hackers. It is better to extend your antivirus protection by using anti-hackers tools which can give you more data protection for your computer.

Always use Complicated Password
Do not share your password to anyone. A password should fulfill the following requirements.
- Do not use your name, birthday as your password.
- A password should have a minimum of 8 characters.
- Always use combination of uppercase and lowercase letters.
- It is better to include numbers with password, e.g. P@ssw0rd.
- Change your password regularly, at least every 45 days.

Do not open Spam Email
Do not open email from unknown sender. Be careful about opening any email with attachment. If you do not know the sender, it is a good practice to delete the email instantly. If you think it is a suspicious email, you can request back to the person to resend the email. You should be more conscious about the emails with hyperlink. Some email service providers like Gmail, Yahoo have the extra layer of protection which can prevent away from unusual circumstances. Always avoid checking promotional emails.

Avoid browsing porn websites
Most of the virus came from porn websites. It actually creates a virtual environment to attract its visitors. You should avoid those porn websites to keep your computer free from viruses.

Limit access your computer with others
If you really want uninterrupted computer use, you should limit access of your personal computer user. In addition, don’t share your computer resources with strangers. It is always useful to turn off file sharing. If you do not know how to turn off, you can search on web for tutorial.
