Office Installation Error: "Setup Can't Find or Validate an Installation File…"

Updated on May 16, 2014

A common problem when installing Microsoft Office 2013 is a failure to install, with the error message: “Setup can't find or validate an installation file. Please try reinstalling Office from your installation source….” The error occurs in both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Many forums discuss different ways to fix the problem; I spent about six hours trying them. But in this page, you will find a quick and effective solution to fix this problem within a few minutes.

Screenshot of Setup.exe Error Message

What you may see when you try to install Office 2013.
What you may see when you try to install Office 2013.

“Setup can't find or validate an installation file. Please try reinstalling Office from your installation source, or if you installed from a downloaded package, please re-download and reinstall. If you continue to have problems, please contact Microsoft or your system administrator.”

Failed Solutions Proposed in Forums

I can’t recommend these solutions: I tried them and they didn’t work.

  • Failed solution 1: Restart computer. Restart your Windows 8 or Windows 7 computer, re-insert the Office 2013 installation disk into the DVD drive, and then run the Office setup.exe. In my experience you just get the above error message again.
  • Failed solution 2: Run as administrator. Right-click on the setup.exe file, and choose “Run as administrator” before installing Office 2013. In my experience you just get the above error message again.
  • Failed solution 3: Turn off Firewall. From the Control panel, go to Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Turn Windows Firewall on or off -> Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended) and then run the setup.exe file. Again, the same error will appear and you wil not be able to install Office 2013.
  • Failed solution 4: A mix of "Failed solution 3" and "Failed solution 2." Disable the firewalls as in 3) above, run as “administrator” as in 2) above, and then try to install Office. In my experience, a lot of struggle, and you end up with the same error message.

So How Do You Resolve the Error and Install Office 2013?

To solve this problem, in Windows 7 or 8, just do the following steps:

Step 1: Copy all the files from the Microsoft Office 2013 folder and paste them into a folder on your hard drive. Suppose we create a folder named My Office 2013, and paste into it all the files which we copied from the CDs or DVD in which we received Office 2013.

Step 2: From the copied folder, find the setup.exe file. Select that file, right-click on it, and choose the “Run as administrator” option from the menu.

"Run as Administrator"
"Run as Administrator"

Step 3: After you complete Step 2, the User Account Control window will open, and ask you, “Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?” The options are “Yes” and “No.” Just choose Yes to continue installation.

Allow changes
Allow changes

If you complete the above steps, you will see that the installation of Office 2013 on your computer will proceed, and you won’t see the error message “Setup can't find or validate an installation file….”

However, if you encounter any problems, please tell me in the comments section.

This did not work for me. I'm attempting to install excel on windows server 2008 r2. It looks like there is a service that might be missing.
