Getting your Domain Name

If you want to start a professional website, or need to get a personal webpage which is not just a social network profile, but something accessible with a specific web address, the first thing you need is a domain name. Domain names are the addresses we use to access websites every day: "" is a domain name, for example. So the first thing you have to do when you decide to create a new website is choosing the perfect domain name for you. It can be your name and surname, or whatever else. After that you choose the domain extension you prefer: .com is one of the most popular extensions (you can use it even if you do not have a commercial activity, today domain extensions are not so tied to the type of business or to the main nature of the website), or also .org (originally for non-profit websites), .net (always a generic extension good for websites), but there are several extensions. You can also just use a geographical extension (so for example if you live in Italy and your website is in Italian language and will be visited mainly by Italian people, you would choose .it extension).

After you have decided what domain name you'd like to register, you need to find a company who offers domain name registration services (the ICANN accredited companies). You can often also buy the web hosting space in which you will create your website (you can upload static web pages, use an automatic tool to generate your website or rely on some CMSs or blog platforms like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and other ones. One of the most popular companies that offers all these services to you, and also many others, is surely GoDaddy, which is one of the biggest names of Internet. In the next paragraph, I will guide you in processes that you will need to follow in order to start your website with GoDaddy.

Registering Only the Domain Name

You can just register a domain name through GoDaddy, in order to point it to your blog hosted on Blogger or, or any other place in which you host a website. In order to do so, just follow these passages:

1.) Open GoDaddy website and type your domain name, then proceed.

2.) If your domain name, you will be asked to choose another one, otherwise you will be able to continue. Confirm the selection and just follow the next passages, in which you will be asked to provide your personal data, and in which you will be able also to choose among various services.

In order to associate your domain and to point it to an already existing website, you will need to follow the provider's instructions (for example, Google instructions in case you are connecting a domain name to your Blogger blog). Basically you will be asked to change your DNS settings. Below, you can find screenshots of GoDaddy DNS control panel:

Starting a WordPress Website

By registering a new domain name and pointing it to a blog service like Blogger you are able to pay just the name and get a free blog in minutes. If you use, you'll also pay the option to add a custom domain name (while pointing a domain name in Blogger is free, in that's a premium paid option, even if you already own the domain name). But if you need a completely customizable website, you probably need to get web hosting space, MySQL database and then install blog platform, that you will be able to customize by adding themes, plugins, or even writing own PHP code for the most experienced web developers. The surprise (not so much a surprise, most of the big companies today offer such a type of service) is that GoDaddy offers you a specific and automatic WordPress Registration Service, that will allow you to register a domain and install WordPress in a one-click action, without caring about setting a new web hosting space and pointing a MySQL database to it: it is just all set automatically for you by GoDaddy: you purchase the plan and in few clicks you get your website fully ready to be customized and started.
