Huawei Honor 3 or Glory 3 Reviewed – Pros and Cons

Updated on December 21, 2013

The Huawei Honor 3 is the third iteration in the Honor series of smartphones. The first two entries were mid-range smartphones noted for their good price/value ratio and the third entry is not any different. Like its predecessors, the Honor 3 is also known as the Glory 3. For some reason, Huawei decided to give the same phone different names depending on where you live.

There doesn't seem to be any difference in terms of specs, just the name is different. Nevertheless, the Honor 3 or Glory 3 takes its traditionally great price/value ratio even further by offering resistance to dust and water. This rare feature gives the Honor 3 its own unique set of specific strengths and weaknesses.

Good: the Huawei Honor 3 is resistant to water and dust

The most prominent feature of the Huawei Honor 3 is without a doubt its resistance to both dust and water. The phone has been constructed in such a manner that dust and water cannot easily penetrate the internals of the phone as is usually the case with other phones.

Both can easily permanently damage a smartphone, but the Huawei is protected from both. That means you can use the phone in the rain without having to worry about it. The phone can even be completely submerged in water at a depth of up to one meter and for up to 30 minutes.

I personally would not try this even if the phone is capable of it. However, it's nice to know that if the phone falls into a bathtub, it's not a goner. The touchscreen is fully usable even if it's wet. This resistance to water and dust is really a very useful feature and it's a shame not all phones have it.

Good: the Honor 3 offers a very good feature set

Despite being only a mid-range smartphone officially, the specifications are very competitive even when they are compared to high-end smartphones. With a quad-core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and a roomy 4.7 inch HD screen, the phone is well above other mid-range phones.

The included camera is also better than that of most smartphones. It's not as good as a few specific models with high-end cameras, but the Honor 3 is definitely better equipped in this regard than most smartphones out there.

Good: the Huawei Honor 3 is very cheap in relation to what you're getting

The price of the Huawei Honor 3 is slightly more than $300 unsubsidized, even though it has only recently been released. That makes the phone very cheap for what you're getting in return in terms of specs, build quality and so on.

Even without a water and dust resistant construction the Honor 3 would have been a good deal at that price. As it is, the Huawei is an absolute steal in my opinion. If you're looking for a bargain, the Honor 3 is definitely worth looking into.

Good: the screen of the Huawei Honor 3 is just the right size

This can vary from person to person, but in my opinion the screen of the Honor 3 is the ideal size for most people at 4.7 inch and a resolution of 720x1280. It's big enough to handle everything, but not too large so that it becomes difficult to handle.

Also noteworthy is that the touchscreen can be used even when your hands are completely wet. You can literally stand in the pouring rain and use your phone as if it's good weather. Being resistant to water is a very nice feature to have.

Neutral: the brand Huawei is relatively unknown

The Honor 3 is of course made by Huawei, which can be both a good and bad thing. On the one hand, Huawei will price their products very competitively to entice people into buying their phones. For the consumer, this creates the opportunity to get more for their money.

On the other hand, Huawei does not have an established track record when it comes to smartphones. Therefore, there is a certain element of uncertainty as to what you're getting in the long run. It may or may not be good. It's hard to say for sure.

Neutral: the Huawei Glory 3 has an average amount of storage, but is expandable

The Honor or Glory 3 comes with 8 gigabytes of internal storage which is not that much. Only part of this can still be used because the operating system takes up a good chunk of space. If you like to store lots of music files or movie clips, you will very quickly run out of space.

Fortunately, there is a MicroSD slot in the phone that you can use to create more space for files or other downloads. Of course, you will have to buy a MicroSD card yourself because Huawei does not provide you with one.

Bad: the Huawei Honor 3 is slower than equivalent phones

Although the Huawei comes with a quad-core processor, the phone seems to be slightly slower than other phones with quad-core processors. The phone seems to come with an older cpu that cannot match the performance of newer quad-cores.

So even though the Honor 3 is a new phone, some of its internal components are somewhat outdated. Unlike other phones, the Honor 3 is not a completely state-of-the-art smartphone. If you're looking for the absolute fastest phone out there, then the Honor 3 is not for you.

4 stars for Huawei Honor 3 or Glory 3

Summary and comparison of what's good or bad in the Huawei Honor 3 or Glory 3

In my opinion, the Huawei Honor 3 is a very good choice if you're on a budget and looking for a mid-range smartphone. This is especially true for people who will be outdoors a lot. There is a lot to like and very little to dislike about the Honor 3.

The phone offers a lot at a very reasonable price without making a lot of compromises. It's actually closer to being a high-end phone despite being priced as a mid-range phone. It's not a cheap phone in absolute terms, but compared to what you get in return, it's hard to find another phone with a similar price/features package.

In fact, it may be the only smartphone out there right now that offers comprehensive resistance to dust and water in its price class. In daily use, this feature has a lot of practical use. It's importance cannot be stated enough.

It allows you to use your smartphone in situations that other phones cannot handle. If a phone cannot be used due to the weather, then it is of no use to you. No matter what kind of phone it is or how much you paid for it, it might as well not exist.

The Honor 3 on the other hand allows you to maintain the capabilities that come with a smartphone such as staying in contact with others. In this way, the Huawei can be of assistance to you even when other phones are unable to perform. Having such a phone is more than worth it.
