Internet- a Global Community

Gone are the days when people communicate to each other through letters. Written communication was the only way to communicate and it took one week or more to reach to the destination depend on the distance and location. That was the time when if any individual wanted to spread or convey their idea, thought or information to wide range of population, the only way was through news papers. Our social reach was very few and limited to very small place. People from one place or country were rarely communicated to the people from another place or country. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio and computer made it possible to communicate faster. These inventions set the stage for making the fastest communication media with unprecedented integration of capabilities called internet.

The internet, also consider as network of networks, is a global network connecting millions of computers. It consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks. It has a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. There are different kinds of services available on internet, such as, Email, Internet telephony, instant messaging, videos and pictures upload and download, Internet forums, and social networking. It is a place where large amounts of online information and knowledge are available. It enables individuals and organizations to publish their ideas and information to a potentially large audience online at greatly reduced expense and time delay. The numbers of internet users are increasing day by day. It has surpassed 3 billion or 43.6 percent of world population.


Internet is very useful for any individual who wants entertainment or gain large amount of information and knowledge sitting alone at their place. It provides an easy way to access all kind of entertainment and knowledge. There are lots of people who when come from their work or offices look for some fast entertainment and even search for some information about different topics. Internet provides them this capability with ease and without any requirement to leave their place. It is also useful for those people who are not social or do not want to meet with other people directly but still want to chat with some other people without any geographical limit. There are thousands of online games available on internet which is easily available and accessible for any individual who wants to play online. In short, we can say, internet is now a good friend for any individual.


Nowadays there are lots of educational institutions connected on internet and providing their educational services online. Thus students have lots of opportunity to choose the best institution among them even from very large distance because most of them provide distance education. Internet is a place where huge amount of information and knowledge are easily available and thus it is very useful for students of any age group. The information available on internet is very useful for students as well as other professionals to complete their assignments and projects. Actually internet can be considered as an educational hub where any person who wants to gain knowledge and education can easily get it in very less expense. In short, we can say, The Internet in general and the World Wide Web in particular are important enablers of both formal and informal education.


As internet is gaining very popularity and its number of users increasing day by day, Business organizations are also getting online to cope with this changing situation. Today internet is widely used by businesses and other organizations to promote their brands and to market to their targeted customers. They understand that if they have to survive and compete with this ever changing market situation, they cannot ignore the popularity of internet. As Internet can be accessed almost from anywhere through mobile Internet devices, Mobile phones, data cards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers, business organizations can easily promote their brands and market their products to large number of customers directly and with very cost effective manner. They also encourage posts regarding their products to "go viral".


Almost every government well understands the importance of internet and thus they try to control all illegal online activities of their people and also provide different government services online. Different government organizations and departments such as railway, airways and electricity department provide online booking and bill payment facilities. Many government universities as well as national news channels also provide their services online. Due to popularity of internet and its large number of users, nowadays, many political parties use internet as a medium for their political campaign. Internet is also important for any government because it keeps them informed about what their people think, what they like and what they want.


Social networking sites play an important role to popularize internet. The Internet has enabled and accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. There are many social networking websites available on internet that has created new ways to socialize and interact, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace. In these sites their Users are able to add a wide variety of information to pages, to pursue common interests, and to connect with others. Users of these sites can express their thoughts, upload and download pictures and images, send and receive emails, chat with each other, share their feelings and can make new friends worldwide without any geographical limit. Actually, internet is a best medium to connect with the people worldwide.

Thus we can say, internet is a best place for any individual to make unlimited friends and can connect with unlimited people worldwide. No matter what is their social status, money, position, place or religion, Internet is for all. Thus it has created a new way for our society and enabled a new form of global community.
