IPad 2 News

Updated on August 28, 2011

The new iPad 2 is out!! Head over to the Apple website to read all about the specs and features there or continue to read this article to see if I was right with my iPad 2 predictions ;-). Below the first videos of the new Ipad 2! Enjoy!

Update: The new iPad2 is now available at Amazon, see box below!

The Official Ipad 2 Video

Can it replace an Ipad Case?

See the video below and decide for yourself if the new Ipad 2 smart cover really can replace a dedicated Ipad cover or Ipad case!

The New Ipad 2 Smart Cover

I was right and I was wrong ;-)

The new iPad still doesn't make coffee, but a lot of features I have predicted have indeed been incorporated. Here my 'I was right /wrong about the new ipad 2 Feature List'.

I was right about

  • Two cameras, front and rear, yup incorporated in the new iPad 2. And the rear one is HD, what else can you wish for?
  • Thinner and lighter. Yup, again right, around 33% thinner, 15% lighter and two times faster than the old one.
  • Flash Support. Seems that not, sorry, Steve is violently against the flash format, see below.
  • Better screen resolution. Yup, this one seems to have been improved considerably!

I was wrong about

  • Faster speed. Ok, actually I didn't mention this when I first published this hub, but it seems that the new iPad is at least 2x faster than its predecessor!
  • Integrated cover, another thing I didn't predict, but the new iPad two has an integrated cover that looks really smart and even doubles as an iPad stand!
  • USB Ports. Uh, oh, as far as I can see no luck, what a pity, users will still have to resort to adapters.
  • Batterie Life. Nops, still the same at 10 hours, but that is not bad, isn't it?
  • Release date. A little earlier than I predicted, but not much, less than a month actually ;-)

Just when you bought your new Ipad, plus a matching Ipad case obviously, internet gossip emerges that Apple plans to release a new model. The Ipad 2, also called the Ipad 2nd generation, is rumored to hit the market in 2011. But when? And what will be the difference to the 'older' Ipad model? Read on to read the newest Ipad 2 rumors and to keep up to date when Apple releases its newest version of the bestselling tablet computer of all times by following the News Ticker on the bottom of this article.

When Will the New Ipad 2 Come Out?

That is the 30 million dollar question ;-) But when looking at Apple's normal release pattern, somewhen in Spring 2011. Apple tends to release new products with a, roughly, 12 month schedule. As the 'old' Ipad was released in January 2010 (see photo on the right), this gives us early 2011 for the release of the new one. All things being equal and Apple sticking to its usual schedule!

Will the Ipad2 Make Coffee?

The 'wish lists' regarding the features of the Ipad2 that buzz around the internet are pretty much endless. Support for flash files is really high on the list for many, but will Apple listen? Chances are that not ;-( With HTML5 just around the corner (see this BBC article for more information) it is unlikely that Apple will start to support a format that will be soon obsolete. Read also what Apple's big boss, Steve Job wrote once about Flash and why Apple 'doesn't allow Flash' on its, mobile, products. After you digested this information, you will understand why we can bury our hopes that the new Ipad2 will ever support the Flash format. But what else could be in the box?

A dual camera, meaning a lens on the rear (for taking photos with live view) and one at the front (for use as a web camera / video camera) is highly likely. Also USB port(s) are high on the wish list, to make the Ipad more 'connectible' with other devices, and especially with external storage. Importing images from your digital camera would be a real blast then. Other, wished for, features include a longer batterie life (always handy when traveling), a lower weight (rumor has it that the new Ipad will have a shell made of carbon fiber) and a higher screen resolution (but with the same screen size).

But I am pretty confident when saying that the Ipad2 will not be able to brew you a cup of coffee, that was a joke, but apart of that, it really looks as if Apple is planning to release an all singing, all dancing, new gadget.

The Case of the Ipad2 Cases

Another internet buzz surrounds the, alleged, Ipad2 cases from China. A Chinese website/e-shop/online trading platform with the glorious name of is offering 'Ipad2 Cases' in all shapes and forms. But possibly not for long, an article in The Wallstreet Journal states, that the website in question has received a 'take down notice' for the Ipad2 cases. Both and Apple refuse to make any further comments. Apple in fact is saying even less regarding the 'Case of the Ipad2 Cases', they say – nothing. But chances are good, that it was Apple that asked for the removal of the listings, as they seem to be more likely a spoof or linkbait by the merchants in question. is a trading platform for many, different online merchants and some of them could have a bit over eager to get new business, this could damage the brand reputation of Apple if the cases wouldn't fit the, still not released, nor even announced, Ipad2.

Ipad2 Release Date

My personal guess is, that the new Ipad will be on the market in spring 2011 and if I really would like to guess wildly, I would say it will be, officially, presented on 1st April 2011. Why? Because I think that Apple has a sense of humor ;-)

What Will Happen When the New Ipad Second Generation Hits the Market?

A lot of people will buy into the hype and get the newest model, not because they need it, just because it is available - and cool. This will have two consequences, one is that there will be a surge of perfectly working 'old' Ipads on the second hand market and second that the price for a new 'old' model will go down considerably. Bearing in mind that Apple products are high quality and build to last, this means, for the conscientious customer, that s/he can pick up an Ipad of the first generation at a really attractive price!

What does Apple Say to All This?

Nothing! Apple refuses to comment on any plans of a new Ipad model, but, as outlined above 'someone' made a lot of effort to get the Chinese 'Ipad2 cases' pulled from the internet. I wonder why ... ;-)

Cool hub. I felt myself reading a thriller. Apple loves to amaze suddenly without any warnings each year on the same time. So, Spring 2011 is the date for new iPad :)

You can say that, it is always possible to wait for the next generation in the world of computers and so on, but it is also very nice to have the smart gadgets while they are smart, so I guess I would just like to buy them while they are here, instead of looking for whats coming.

Then we just have to hope, that the Ipad 2 has been tested better than the Iphone4, which was quite disappointing in my opinion. It didn't really give us something new, so now of course we are looking for the Ipad 2.

I would be interested to see if you are right and the new Ipad2 includes flash ;-) Steve Jobs sounded pretty firm imho about his dislike for flash format, but then, everybody is entitled to change his / her opinion, even he ;-) SY

Great hub, I love these new tablets. They really are a great step forward for certain things. I believe that Apple has now relented and allowed Flash on-board in order to avoid litigation. Although I'm not sure how long it will take Adobe to act on that, they really are quite hopeless. I've heard that flash is usually the thing that bogs down Android tablets making equivalent models to the iPad a lot more sluggish at times and running down their battery life. I hope the day comes when we can all just drop flash whatever device we're using.
