Known DISH Hopper Bugs Include Problems with the Timeout Feature and Reset Issues

DISH’s Hopper and Joey system is an impressive, state of the art technology when it comes to whole-home HD-DVR receivers. However, because it’s so new, it’s not without its bugs. While DISH works tirelessly to improve and update the Hopper and Joey system, many of which have already been made since its release in March, there are still a couple of major known bugs that DISH is currently working to fix.

Hopper and Joey Timeout Bug

If you’re having trouble with your Hopper and Joey’s Timeout feature, you’re not alone. This feature was designed to conserve power. Ideally, the customer will see a prompt on the screen after a certain amount of time that asks if they’re still watching. If the prompt is ignored, the Hopper will go into Powersave mode. Unfortunately, the feature is not currently working properly for all customers.

Some DISH customers have reported that their Hoppers will spontaneously shut off when they’re already in Powersave mode. Here’s an example of a recent comment we received about this problem:

“Can you turn the auto shut off feature on and off? and if so how? I want to keep the TV on for the kids all night and it keeps shutting off in the middle of the night.”

Apparently, the inactivity prompt is still being sent to the Hopper, which obviously is not seen by the customer as the Hopper is not active. When it’s “ignored,” it will shut the Hopper down completely. This prevents timers from working and can interfere with scheduled DVR recordings as a result.

Trouble Disabling the Timeout Feature

Although you should be able to disable it in the Diagnostics > Updates section of the Main Menu, some customers who say they’ve disabled the feature are still experiencing Hopper shutdowns when the receiver is not in use as a result of the bug:

“After an hour or so, my hopper shuts off for no activity…I went to settings, diagnostics, updates and set to disable and it still shuts off when i wake up the next morning.”

Hopper and Joey Reset Issue

Another issue that some DISH customers have raised is a reset problem:

“Just had hopper and 3 joey's installed last month. Since then I have had to reset the Hopper and joeys 3 to 5 times every day (reset them 3 times in an hour today) for various reasons… Don't get me wrong, when they are working they are great. But it is a bit of a pain to have to reset these things several times a day.”

The only current fix for this problem is to follow through with a reset, although it is a temporary one.

The good news is that DISH is aware of both of these bugs, and the technical crew is actively working toward a solution to both of the issues. If you’ve yet to order a Hopper and Joey system, don’t let these problems discourage you. Most customers are pleased with their Hopper and Joey and don’t experience any trouble. For those who are dealing with these bugs, All Internet-connected Hoppers update themselves nightly to include any new features or fixes as they become available. That means that, as soon as these bugs have been fixed, your Hopper and Joey system will be updated to reflect the changes.

      2016 and this is still a problem. Now with no prompt, it just shuts off on its own. Happened to me twice this month already. Last night, it happened while I was watching a DVR recording!

      I decided to do a search on this problem I am having with the Joey as well.. I cannot believe this article was written back in Dec 2012.. I have called dish 5 times now and they still said no ETA and are still working on it...

      I apologize for the inconvenience. I wish I could provide you with a clear answer, but unfortunately, I am also at the mercy of DISH when it comes waiting on fixes for the Hopper and Joey bugs. I try to remember that this is still a new technology, so it often takes some time (as frustrating as it can be!). My best suggestion is to call the DISH Customer Care line from time to time and see if they may be able to give you a status update. I hope that helps!

      My hopper loses many shows in "my recordings"...i understand this is is a bug but so far no one can tell me when it will be fixed.

      Thanks for the tip! Some customers find that the Hopper and Joey will still completely shut down when in Powersave mode, causing them to have to reboot the system upon powering up again. This is an issue DISH is still working to resolve.

      MENU...SETTINGS...DIAGNOSTICS...UPDATES...SELECT UP TO 8 HOURS OR DISABLE...SAVE

      Yes, my family just got the Hopper and we are experiencing the same thing. I've set the option to disable the automatic shutoff, but it still interrupts my programming by asking me to press a button on the remote to avoid the shutoff.

      I apologize for your frustration. I completely understand how annoying it must be. I've heard this and other similar complaints from customers regarding these bugs several times, so I decided to write this article to let all of those who are struggling with these issues know that DISH is currently working on them. Unfortunately, I don't work for DISH and cannot correct any of the issues myself. I wish I could be of more help in this matter, but I do hope the issue is resolved for you quickly.

      TV'S HAVE HAD THE SLEEP MODE FOR YEARSSSSSS. BUT YOU CAN SET THE TV TO GO OFF WHEN "YOUR" READY FOR IT TO DO THIS, WITH YOUR SYSTEM THE WAY IT IS YOU MAKE IT THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO STOP THIS NOT TO GO OFF BY DISABLING. WHYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! LET PEOPLE MAKE THE CHOICE WHEN "THEY" ARE READY TO NOT YOU FORCE THIS UPON THEM. YOU TOOK A GOOD THING AND MADE IT BAD!!!!! ITS SO AGGERVATING TO GO TO THE OTHER ROOM FOR A COUPLE MINS AND TO RETURN TO FIND BECAUSE YOUR NOT SITTING THERE STAREING AT THE TV ITS GONE OFF BECAUSE YOU DID NOT SEE THE POSTING TO NOT TURN OFF AND CLICK IT WITH THE REMOTE.
