Laptop buying guide

Updated on January 27, 2010

This holiday season many would want to get their hands on some new toys. With so many options out there, it would be hard for some people to decide what laptop is best for them. Here I will suggest some laptops that I feel are the best in their price range.

These laptop generally provide great value and can fulfill all your day to day requirements.

At this price range you will all get the high end hardware, but the basic that will be sufficient for activities like Web surfing, Movies, music, Office and so on.

Here is a laptop i feel is very good in this price range as it provide decent performance and its small size make it very portable.

Acer Aspire 1410: $420

This is a nice little laptop with an 11.6" with a resolution of 1366 x 768. This make it a little bigger than most netbooks and has a higher resolution too. Its got a full sized keyboard, but some people with big hands may have some issues.

It has a Core 2 solo ultra low voltage processor which is clocked at 1.4GHz.
It is a lot better than the atom in terms of performance but consumes a little more power.

This has 250GB HDD space, which i feel is a little less, but you can always dump you stuff on to an external drive. Its got 2GB RAM, wifi, webcam and come pre-installed with windows vista home premium.

To have a look at the laptop and some more customer reviews please use the amazon link on the right.

Gateway NV5425U : $520

I generally like Gateway as their laptops are really good value for money. This one features an LED back-lit 15.6HD Display with a resolution of 1366x768.

It is powered by an Intel T4300, which is clocked at 2.1GHz, 800MHz FSB and 1 MB of cache.
This along with 4GB of DDR2 667MHz memory and 320GB HDD (5400rpm) can provide enough power for all your multimedia needs.

Its got Integrated GMA4500M , which is not great, but is fine for general needs and occasional gaming (at low settings). As for the features, it does support DX10 and dynamic video memory.

The unit come with Windows 7 home premium 64-bit pre installed, which is great as i personally like windows 7. With 4GB RAM you should have a very pleasant experience working on microsoft's new OS.

Apart from this its got a lot of software that comes with it, has 4 USB 2.0, 1 VGA and 1 HDMI connector.

The system weighs 5.84lbs (2.65Kg) which is pretty good for a laptop of this size.

Overall this is a very good system for the price and you will not regret buying it !

HP G71-340US : $599 ($550 after rebate)

Its is an amazing laptop from HP. Looks nice and has pretty decent performance too.

Its has a 17.3" LED backlit screen, so its very good for movies and other multimedia. Its got a nice resolution of 1600x900.

It features an Intel T6600 processor, which is clocked at 2.2Ghz, 800MHz FSB and 2MB of L2 cache. It also has 4GB of DDR2 memory, 320GB SATA hard disk. As with a lot of HP laptops, this one comes with Windows 7 pre installed and a LOT of software.

Well, when you buy a big laptop its gonna be heavy. This one weighs 6.72lbs (approx 3Kg), which is not too bad.

If your looking for a very good multimedia laptop or a desktop replacement, this will be a perfect choice.
