Updated on March 28, 2014

Turkey has begun blocking access to social media websites

In mid-march 2013, Turkey's Internet Providers began blocking access to social media sites, most notably, A week later, Turkish ISP's began blocking access to the free Video behemoth, Youtube. The explanation given by the Turkish government was that these sites presented a threat to Turkey's "National Security," though many people around the world believe it is more likely an attempt to block access to possible evidence of government corruption in Turkey that was being shared among the Turkish people through social media websites.

Turkish People in Search of Internet Access Solutions

Since the twitter shutdown, the people of Turkey (especially the heavy internet user demographic) has begun searching for and sharing workarounds to unblock twitter and youtube and regain access to blocked social media sites.

The most common solution is the use of a VPN or Virtual Private Network, to tunnel through the Turkish firewall and circumvent internet restrictions. Because the Turkish government controls access to the web, information about VPN's has largely been shared in internet forums or by word of mouth.

To unblock Twitter you need a VPN

A VPN, also known as a virtual private network, is an encrypted internet connection that will allow you to access internet servers outside turkey. If you use a VPN, nobody can see what websites you are accessing, and they cannot block any websites like twitter, facebook, youtube, or netflix.

To access a VPN and unblock twitter you must first sign up for a VPN service provider. This usually costs between $3-$12 per month. Then, just download the VPN software, enter your account information, and connect to a server located in a country of your choice.

Once you are connected to the VPN server, you will have free access to the internet with no restrictions or blocked sites. You will have full access to social media sites like facebook and twitter.
