Updated on February 22, 2013

About 3d software

here are many 3d applications available in the market. All applications have some good and unique features. 3d applications used in movies, games, architecture or any other industry they use these 3d programs. These are the list of most used application programs in the industry:

Autodesk Maya
Autodesk Maya is the industry leader in feature film and television industry. It has won many awards in industry and it used in many feature films like James cameron avatar, Transformers: Dark of the Moon , Harry potter the deathly hallows-2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Rango, Spider-Man, the hulk, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines etc. This list is very big. In fact they love it. It is a complete package of all the tools like modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, hair, fur, cloth, dynamics etc. Maya uses Maya Embedded Language (MEL) and Python, with the help of these languages you can create more new and powerful scripts and plugins for Maya and even you can completely customize Maya. This is one of the main features of Maya. In starting you will feel little difficult to learn Maya but once you get it. Then it’s the time to produce the good things with it.

Autodesk 3ds Max
It is 3d software of Autodesk. It is used mainly in gaming and architecture companies. But I am not denying that it is not used in film and television industry. Many companies use it in its production pipeline for creating amazing visual effects in films and television. It loaded with same things like modeling, texturing, lighting, rigging, animation, hair, fur, dynamics etc. It is also very good program. Students generally feel easy to learn 3ds max as compare than Maya. But if you learnt how to work in one 3d program then learning another 3d program becomes very easy.

I want to draw you attention towards 2 things:

  1. Modeling is very easy in 3ds Max as compare than Maya.
  2. You can create very powerful rigs with Maya as compare than 3ds Max

Autodesk Softimage
Again it is an Autodesk product. Formerly it was Avid Softimage XSI. Autodesk took over Avid and it becomes Autodesk Softimage. It is used in game, film, and TV projects. It can do all things like modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, visual effects etc. It is a complete package.

Cinema 4D
Maxon cinema 4d is one of the good software available in market. It has all the features like modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, rendering, etc. It is used in films, architecture and visualization and even in engineering. It comes in different bundles. You can choose from different bundles like cinema 4d prime, studio, broadcast and visualize.

Blender
Blender is free 3d software among the list above. Yes, read right word FREE. It is very powerful software. You can do modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, rendering etc. in it. You can create very good and powerful movies with it. Students and artists who have less money or no money they can use it. Many small companies use it in its production pipeline for producing visual effects. It is available for all windows, Mac, Linux operating system. You can download blender from www.blender.org and you can watch video tutorials for learning it.

Luxology Modo
Modo is one of the easiest and very cheap 3d software available. It has all the features like Maya or max like modeling, texturing, lighting animation etc. But it is not powerful like Maya and max. But it can do basic and mid level things in it. According to its price and usability 3d artists use it.

List of best 3d sculpting software

Sculpting software used to create more detail in 3d objects which is not possible in traditional 3d software. After creating sculpting on object artists export map from sculpting software to apply on character in 3d software.

Zbrush
Pixologic Zbrush is the industry leader in digital sculpting tools. It is very powerful sculpting software that can support more than 1 billion polygon faces in object. Artists can create whole character with it or can do only sculpting on imported character. You can create amazing quality detail within few minutes with the help of Zbrush. It is used in gaming and film and television industry mostly. Modelers use it for creating detailed objects and morphs for characters.

Mudbox
It is another Autodesk product. It is very similar to Zbrush. It is specially diesigned for modeling and texturing. You can easily use it with Maya and 3ds Max because it is an Autodesk product.
