Win 7 System Requirements recommended by Microsoft

1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Steps

Windows Update: It is recommended to keep your Windows up to date always. Go to Control Panel > Windows Updates and make sure if your Windows is up to date. If not manually install both important and optional updates.

Antivirus Programs: Do not use multiple antivirus programs at once. If you want to try a different antivirus program, remove the current one and then install the new one. There are paid as well as free programs. You can keep the Windows Defender along with your antivirus program. Microsoft Security Essentials, provided by Microsoft is one of the best free antivirus programs. Do run scheduled scans and keep your it always up to date in order to protect your .computer from threats.

Free up Hard Disk space by removing unwanted programs: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and remove any unwanted programs. There would be trial softwares which have become expired. Remove them. Remove any expired Antivirus programs.

Clear the Temporary Files: When we use computer temporary files will be created. Type %temp% in the Run Command window and clear the temp files. Clear the temp files from every user accounts. Go to C Drive > Windows > Temp and clear the temp files.

Speed up the Start up: You may have programs like Instant Messengers which starts with the Windows. You can disable the third party applications to speed up the start up. Do not disable your Antivirus from start up.

Disable Visual Effects: Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Performance > Settings. Click Adjust for Best Performance.

If you are using less than 1GB RAM, there are some advanced steps that you can try.

Disable screensaver, disable thumbnail views in folders, set custom virtual memory (if you have enough HDD space). Perform Disk Cleanup as well as Disk Defrag.
