How to Choose The best Bluetooth Speaker to Suit You.

Updated on February 24, 2018

Factors I considered to find my best value

When considering which speaker would be best for me I compared several portable Bluetooth speakers based on reviews, features and other factors. Everyone has priorities mine are value & price. I could pay $130-300+ for a Bose speaker to get the best sound available on the market and almost everything I want out of a portable speaker but I am not willing to shell out that much money if I can get everything I need for less. My ideal speaker must sound great, be lightweight, portable, durable, waterproof, have a speakerphone, long playtime and charge quickly. I am I asking too much? After comparing many similar speakers in its class I found that the MercuryBox clearly has the best value for me. It is not currently available in Canada but I am stubborn and had to have it anyway. It is built to perform anywhere life takes me, it adds the right ambiance and atmosphere without letting me down. MercuryBox is a waterproof Bluetooth shower speaker by Inateck, a company I have come to rely on for their innovative & high quality products. I have several of their items and love them plus they have great personal customer service, something that most big name companies do not offer. The MercuryBox is a waterproof, hands-free speakerphone device that is portable, durable & rugged with a long battery life. More importantly the quality and clarity of sound is exceptional and loud. It currently sells for only about $55 dollars on Amazon.com and with its well-balanced variety of superior features it is competitive with high end portable Bluetooth speakers more than twice its price.

What is your priority when choosing a Bluetooth speaker?

Loud High Quality Audio Sound

The MercuryBox is louder than all of the Bluetooth speakers I own, I have several portable speakers in the $25-60 dollar range to use for comparison, including waterproof ones. I could pay about 4 times the price to buy a Bose Sound Link II but it is neither waterproof nor do I consider it portable or durable. The Mercury box is not only surprisingly loud for its size, but the sound quality is impressive. I tested the MercuryBox with a variety of different genres of music as well as other media, movies and videos. It demonstrated excellent clarity out of the box and the sound was further enhanced by customizing the EQ settings to my preferences for each type by adjusting the settings on my audio device. The speaker boasts two 5 watt output drivers for a total of 10 watts of electrical power. It was able to reproduce more life like sound and a lot of definition and detail in comparison to the other portable speakers. This Bluetooth speaker really packs a punch and I was shocked to get such great bass and volume output for this price. It was able to produce both the highs and lows in good quality music. It has a good midrange, as well as an overall well-balanced sound. Even at full volume there is no distortion, clipping or feedback. This great speaker will allow you to enjoy high definition sound anywhere you go. Most people are surprised to hear such big sound from this small speaker. I have had many compliments on the sound and even a few people approach me to ask where they can buy it. Unfortunately I have had to explain that the MercuryBox it is not available in Canada YET, but, they do sell other items Canada.

Design

It has an eye catching design that makes it look great and blend in with the décor wherever it is used. I preferred the look of this speaker over all of the other ones I contemplated. The silver ‘Mercury’ color looks smart and pairs well with just about any color. It will look professional on your desk at work, modern at a party, elegant on your mantle, and stylish anywhere you take it. The finish is similar to Apples’ line of sophisticated looking, anodized aluminum products. Anodized aluminum is a great choice for the shell material, not only to give it great aesthetics, but the oxidation process also known as anodizing, makes it robust and gives it the right qualities to protect and maintain its great appearance. The outer shell is very resilient and made from a combination of anodized aluminum and gray silicone. This casing helps protect it from wear, water, corrosion, bumps, scratches and general damage making it ideal for a speaker designed to go everywhere. There is a silicone flap that seals over the Aux input, micro USB port and reset button to keep water out and further protect it from the elements. It has a soft finish with rubber grips on the bottom to prevent it from vibrating away. The buttons require a firm push by design so that they are not accidently pushed while riding around in your bag. I tend to be very hard on my electronics so it's durability is important to me. The MercuryBox is designed to be both strong and beautiful making it the Athena of speakers.

Waterproof

The design of the anodized aluminum and silicone waterproof outer shell allows the speaker to be used around water or anywhere without worrying about it getting splashed. The speaker has an IPX5 Waterproof rating. IPX (International Protection Rating) is a scale from 0-8 for how much water protection a device has. IPX5 means that the unit will withstand water that is sprayed or splashed onto it making it an essential feature for a durable speaker. Of course it makes a great shower speaker and it has more volume than you would ever need in a shower enclosure. Most people like to sing in the shower because there is something so satisfying about the acoustics. The speaker sounds great, I however, do not. I love that it is able to drown out my horrible singing voice while I belt out my favorite tunes. Most high end Bluetooth speakers do not offer protection from water making it stand out from the rest.

Perfect for Outdoor Use

I think it is beautiful when luxury tech meets the great outdoors. The MercuryBox is portable and small enough to fit in your pocket or bag making it perfect to take anywhere with you. It was one of the smallest & lightest speakers I looked at. This speaker allows you to enjoy your music without boundaries because it is durable and can handle whatever the elements are thrown at it. Enjoy your favorite songs at the beach with your toes in the sand, pool side, while camping, or anywhere outdoors and not worry about splashing or encountering an unexpected rain storm. It is great to be able to leave my phone safely stored away and still listen to music. I brought it with me hiking and we liked having a rhythm to keep us going. I half expected the woodland animals to start dancing. I enjoyed a full music experience that put the GREAT in the great outdoors.

Long Playtime

Party all day and night and be reassured that the music will outlast you. The speaker’s playtime far exceeded my expectations and also played longer than most of my other portable Bluetooth speakers. The MercuryBox’s rechargeable battery can provide an extensive 15 hour playtime on a single charge this is where most of the other speakers fell flat. Plugged into a good charger it will recharge in just a few hours. It contains a high capacity 1800mAh polymer lithium-ion battery. This type of battery is a smart choice for several reasons: it maintains full power until the end of the charge; it is lighter than most batteries; and has a lower profile to promote portability. This type of battery is safe and a more durable power source than other types. It only requires the initial charge to be full so it is low maintenance and holds the charge well over time. The MercuryBox charges via the micro USB port, which has become the most popular choice for peripheral devices so that cables are more readily available. It can be charged by plugging in any USB port using a micro USB connector cable, which seem to be found everywhere these days. Not many speakers have such a long battery life.

Easy to Use Bluetooth Connection

The latest Bluetooth 4.0 technology makes it quick and easy to pair the MercuryBox and connect with Bluetooth audio devices. Bluetooth 4.0 has many advantages over former releases, including ease of use. There is no need to enter a code or pin to pair with audio device. You do not have to download any special software or applications to use this speaker. Many devices will pair automatically with the speaker while others simply need to search in discovery mode and select “Inateck MercuryBox” to pair the device with the speaker. I was able to quickly and easily pair it with my Galaxy S5, iPhone 4s, Android Tablet and HP Pavilion computer by simply selecting “Inateck MercuryBox” in scan or discovery mode. The link offers the standard +33 foot Bluetooth range with a stable connection. The Bluetooth connection is more stable than most devices with less disturbance or interference form things blocking the signal. It doesn’t mean it will work through a bank vault, but I find many Bluetooth devices cut out when a person is between the paired devices or if there is a wall in the way. Bluetooth 4.0 is also backwards compatible with older audio devices that have a 3.0 or 2.0 capability. For audio devices that do not have Bluetooth the MercuryBox it also has a 3.5 millimeter Auxiliary audio input port for a direct connection. While Bluetooth 4.0 sounds great, a few of the benefits utilizing the auxiliary input are: improved sound quality; and a direct connection that uses less battery.

Hands-Free

The MercuryBox is a hands-free device with a built in microphone so I never have to worry about fumbling for my phone if a call comes in while I am listening to music. It also allows me to never miss a call while listening to music, unintentionally that is. I am able to hear my phone ring and take a call at the touch of a button. It has a good quality microphone that sounds crystal clear on both ends. Having a portable device with a speakerphone can be very convenient and useful in many situations. It is great for getting work done while talking on the phone; you will frequently catch me cooking while I chat. Get a group of friends together to sing someone happy birthday or just to talk. It can even make a great tool to use for business conference calls. The convenience of having the built in speakerphone is another must have feature that sets it apart from many other speakers.

Extra Luxuries

The speaker is packaged like it’s a show piece. The MercuryBox makes a perfect gift with its excellent presentation. It basically comes in a gift box with a high end expensive look. The outer carton has a modern design with a clean look, the features and specifications listed are informative and to the point. Inside the carton is a sophisticated black gift package that looks like an oversized jewelry box. Inside the black box there is a felt-like lining with cushions to keep everything in place. The accessories are far better quality than you would expect with a speaker in this price range. It comes with a PU Leather carrying case with a drawstring closure to hold the accessories and speaker. The leather case is convenient, but not needed to protect your speaker, considering how solid it is. It also comes with a braided 4 foot, Micro USB cable for charging, but out of pure curiosity I had to check to see if it was a sync cable and as yet another nice bonus, the cable syncs and transfers at a good rate. For connecting your audio device directly to the speaker, it comes with a braided 4 foot, 3.5 millimetre male to male universal stereo Auxiliary TRS cable with silver fittings. Each of the cables have a soft Velcro cable tie with the Inateck logo on it to keep everything neat and tidy when not in use. A wrist strap is included with it as an optional attachment for convenience, and to secure the speaker, it has an adjustment clip that allows it to be sized and tightened for extra security. There is a thorough, easy to follow manual included in the package that is also available for download from the Inateck.com website. The speaker also has a warranty, so you can rest assured knowing that it will deliver. It is the small details that add up to the exceptional value of this incredible package.

Experience is Everything

Inatecks’ motto is “Experience is Everything”, and when it comes to great sounding quality, Bluetooth speakers they really nailed it. You have to experience the big sound that comes from the MercuryBox, it is truly impressive. You will be amazed at the attention to detail from the packaging and accessories to the speaker itself. If you love to enjoy music everywhere and anywhere, the MercuryBox is for you. It has amazingly loud audio sound for such a portable speaker. I love the look of the anodized aluminum finish, waterproof design, and easy to use features. It is extremely simple to connect and has the option to talk hands-free. You will enjoy great quality and immersive sound for up to 15 hours of playtime. You will never have to sacrifice style, aesthetics or anything to enjoy the speaker everywhere, and anywhere, even outdoors. This powerful little speaker will only break the silence, and not break the bank with such a great price. The Inateck MercuryBox is proof that you do not need your speaker to be plugged in to have great quality and multi-layered sound. Do not underestimate the authority that music can have over your spirit and emotions. Get moving and free yourself and your mind; experience the Inateck MercuryBox.
