My Favorite HD Wallpapers

Updated on March 8, 2016

Every few months I like to change up my desktop wallpapers just to keep everything fresh, and since my computer has quite a high resolution (2560x1440), I'm always faced with the challenge of finding the highest quality imagery possible.

After a few years of doing this, I've accumulated a small library of high-resolution images, which I'd like to share with you today. This is not an objective list, but instead just a collection of my personal favorites. Enjoy!

Rocket Launch (3000 × 1995)

Download Link:

This was one of my earliest wallpapers and still remains one of the best. Something about the framing, the plumes of smoke rising around the rocket ship, and the stark contrast between light and dark makes it altogether extremely eye-catching.

The scene emanates pure unrestrained power at an unbelievable scale.

Ships Docking (1920 × 1200)

Download Link:

i've always loved this one. There's something really serene about it. It harks back to a bygone era when massive sailing ships dominated the seas, trading through trade, exploration, and war.

And there's something that commands your respect about seeing all these great vessels together in one place.

Bentley by the Sea (2560 × 1706)

Download Link:

Nothing quite says style, class, and wealth more than this Bentley photo. And it's not just the car. It's the yacht in the distance, the misty cloudless sky, the sun suspended just above the horizon: paradise.

Gaudy and ostentatious? Yes. But there's something tranquil about it too, and that's why I love it. The waves, the sunset, and a quarter-million-dollar vehicle await you.

Wave (5120 × 2880)

Download Link:

Yes I know, a Mac background. So kind of cheating, right? Well, whatever. I absolutely love this image. Something about the curvature of the wave; the foamless arc, the size and scope of it all, and the way the wave gets greener near the peak.

There's an anticipation, a precariousness to it all, as you get to witness this giant, fleeting natural beauty, caught mere moments before it all comes crashing down.

Sci-Fi City (6000 × 2892)

Download Link:

I love futuristic art renderings, but there are so very few out there that are big enough for my purposes. This is one of the exceptions. And it is extraordinary.

The lighting, the sharp, clean lines framing the scene, the massive skyscraper at the center of it all, showcasing mankind's insatiable desire to spiral ever higher. It just works.

Mt. Fuji over Tokyo (3600 × 2340)

Download Link:

I just discovered this one a few months ago, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. I love the juxtaposition between the natural world and the human world here. You see this sprawling Japanese city, but then way in the distance is the enormous Mt. Fuji, easily dwarfing it all.

Again, I love the clash between the modern and the natural here, and I feel like the message (if there is a message) is so clear. No matter how much we try to build, the natural world will always manage to outdo us.

Stars Over Mount Rainier (2560 × 1600)

Download Link:

This image is so simple, yet so perfect. You've got these enormous northern mountains looming, accentuated by a few evergreens in the corner, but the focus isn't on them. Perhaps kind of a foil to the previous image, here the Universe is dwarfing our own planet.

The wonders of the night sky, and the array of stars spiraling in thin galactic tornado at the center of the image are the true natural wonder in the scene.

Whispers of the Spectrum (3840 × 2160)

Download Link:

Another futuristic city-scape that I just can't get enough of. This time we have a protagonist standing in the foreground, overlooking a massive ultramodern skyline (with flying cars or trains, or whatever those floating lines are). He's alone, which is striking, and maybe even somewhat melancholic. It's up to your interpretation.

But wait, there's more! Because right up in the left-hand corner of the scene is the aura of this massive planet. It's perfect because it's not overdone. It's not in your face at all. It's there in the background waiting for you to notice it, adding to the whole futurism and otherworldliness of the scene.

We're obviously not on Earth anymore in this artwork, and so then you start to wonder what the story is here.

Chinese Junk Ship (2560 × 1440)

Download Link:

Kind of similar to the other ships image, but with a very different setting. This time we're in China, many centuries ago. It's a stirring image seeing this ancient world depicted so realistically.

The foggy atmosphere makes it mysterious and the huge mountain dwarfing the already massive ship adds great scale to this painting as well.

Winter Dusk (3000 × 1947)

Download Link:

Perfect for when the holidays roll around, or just anytime, really. This image really works for me because it depicts another long-gone time period (looks like Britain in the mid-1800's), and the snow creates that ethereal wintery atmosphere that makes you want to get cozy in front of a fireplace.

Well that's it folks, and no, that one on the right is not a wallpaper (unless you want it to be), it's just my signature ending (I guess)...This is only my third article, so the future isn't written yet (did anyone catch that?).

Anyhow, let me know what you thought of all these. Which one was your favorite? Vote below. Do you have any other wallpaper suggestions? (Seriously, I'm always looking for cool new wallpapers). Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading!
