Overview of Mi 8 Pro - the flagship of Xiaomi with a transparent back panel

Design

If you look at the Mi 8 Pro from the front, then it is unlikely to find something outstanding in it. Almost completely filling the front panel screen, "fringe" from the iPhone and a slightly thickened frame below.

But the most important thing is behind. Namely, a translucent panel through which you can see a board with decorative chips. Despite the fact that the visible insides of the smartphone are just pretty dummies, the transparent cover is an interesting solution that distinguishes the smartphone from the competition. At Xiaomi presentations, even demozones work with loops, so that people can distinguish between specifications and meaningful inscriptions.

We did not make a crash test, but there is a feeling that the back panel is not very strong. When tapping, it responds like plastic.

On the left side there is a slot for nanoSIM, at the bottom is a Type-C, on the right is a paired volume button and for some reason a bright red power button.

The smartphone is quite narrow for a comfortable grip and fits well in the hand. Because of the rounded edges, it feels something like the iPhone X - only slightly wider.

Something special in the tactile sensations of using Mi 8 Pro is not. The smartphone is just convenient. Visually, the device differs only in cyberpunk back, and it is strange to call it an advantage. Some like chips like, others do not.

Sound

The sound is average. On the one hand, the Mi 8 Pro has a good volume margin. The sound, albeit with a serious overshoot in the high-frequency region, but readable even at maximum volume.

On the other hand, there is only one speaker here. Stereo sound is what you want to expect from a smartphone with a large screen and a claim to being the flagship. Here it is not.

There is also no mini-jack for Mi 8 Pro, but there is an adapter for it with a USB Type-C included.

Screen

I do not remember when I last had to scold the screen of a smartphone. And again this is not the case: the Mi 8 Pro display is bright and with very pleasant colors.

Here is installed Super AMOLED with a brightness of 402 nits. The picture is detailed, the image on the screen is read even under the sun. The out-of-box calibration is excellent, but the colors and contrast can be adjusted separately.

Supported mode for reading with blue filtering and Always On Display, in which even when the screen is off, shows the time, date and to-do list.

Camera

The module with two 12-megapixel lenses with a light sensitivity of ƒ / 1.8 and ƒ / 2.4 is responsible for the pictures. The first provides the capture of light, the second - helps with portraits and gives optical two-time zoom.

I want to praise the camera. In some scenarios, for example, I did not get the impression that she was losing the camera of my iPhone XS. This comparison with the most flagship flagship Mi 8 Pro was held with dignity, sometimes the difference can be felt unless a detailed comparison or a strong increase.

To the front camera no complaints. High-quality selfies can be done anytime, anywhere. One thing is not clear - why turn on the default beautifier and hide the shutdown button so far. The “decorating” algorithms of Mi 8 Pro are simply disgusting. Here is a photo without the certification:

Software of Mi 8 Pro

Mi 8 Pro is running Android 8.1 with a proprietary shell Xiaomi MIUI 9.6 (MIUI 10 will be released later). This is an iOS-like system with features that are familiar to any "apple" - icons, folders, widget panels.

Borrowing, fortunately, is not limited to design. Everything works here more or less correctly and logically. Therefore, if you like nice and predictable software and you are not sickened by the feeling of being secondary, then MIUI will suit you.

Performance

On board the smartphone: an eight-core Snapdragon 845 processor and 8 GB of RAM. In terms of performance, Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is a real competitive flagship that can handle everything you need: resource-intensive applications, games, and a bunch of programs running at the same time.

Protection

Identification occurs by PIN, fingerprint or face. Analogue Face ID on our sample was not available. On the Internet they say that the system has not yet been launched in Russia, but unlocking in the face can be configured by changing the region to Singapore.

Of greater interest is the dactyloscope, hidden under the screen. It works always and pretty quickly. It is also positioned so that the finger falls on it itself - this is very convenient. The process is accompanied by animation.

Final Words

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro - a sturdy flagship, beating off its amount with interest. It pleasantly lies in the hand, does not irritate with software solutions, makes excellent pictures and good portraits in good light. And still easily live up to the evening charging.

But the differences from the regular version of Mi 8 are still insignificant. If you do not need a transparent lid and a fingerprint sensor under the screen, you may not overpay five thousand.
