Considered to be a variation of planking, Owling is an Internet meme that has gone viral. Here's a quick look at why the act of perching like an owl has gone viral, some of the best Owling pictures, celebrity Owling pictures and steps of Owling.

What is Owling?

Owling is an Internet Meme which is a variation of Planking. Owling is the act of getting your picture taken while squatting like an owl. It involves being perched like an owl at various places. The idea of Owling is to get your picture taken at random places. The more random and creative that someone can get, the better it is.

History of Owling

Although there is no evidence of when exactly the phenomenon of this photo trend started, it was first brought into public notice in July 2011 by Reddit.com, the social news website. It all began with pictures of a girl Owling which went on to become viral on the internet.

Who can do Owling?

As one would imagine, there are no restrictions as to who can get their picture taken while mimicking like an owl. Anyone and everyone can do Owling. Men, women, girls and boys of all ages have been pictured Owling around the world.

Owling: How to

Although the act of Owling is pretty straight forward and simple, here are easy steps you can follow to get your very own Owling picture.

1. Find a stable spot where you can perch yourself like an owl.

2. Make sure there are no disturbances like wind, people passing by or annoying friends who may want to get a laugh by pushing you over.

3. Stand on the spot and check again if it is stable enough. This applies especially to people who are trying to find difficult spots to do Owling.

4. Bend down and assume a squat position.

5. Push your knees apart and put your hands between your feet and hold this position to mimic an owl.

6. Once you are sure that you've got the right stance and your position is secure and stable, look away from the camera to either your left or right.

7. Get your picture taken.

Owling: What next

So you've found a place to mimic an owl and you've got your picture taken. What next? Well the idea of Owling is to post your picture on a social networking website like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or any other website you may be a member of. There are many Owling communities on the internet that you can join and share your Owling pictures and get new ideas for your next Owling picture.

Precautions to take while Owling

Although Owling is generally considered safe, there are few adrenaline junkies who want to take Owling to the next level by perching on statues, monuments, building roof tops and even trees. This is extremely risky, dangerous and not recommended because you may suffer serious or even fatal injuries if you lose your balance on such precarious spots and fall down. Make sure you perch yourself on a safe and stable spot because risking life and limb is really not worth it.

Celebrity Owling

There are many celebrity Owling pictures that have been posted by celebrities on their very own Twitter walls or other social networking profiles. Actress Hilary Duff, Disney's Debby Ryan, Demi Lovato, teen actress Bella Thorne and radio personality Jojo Wright have all had their Owling pictures posted on the internet. I'm glad you found this interesting. The funny thing is that except the position of the hands, people actually sit like this in some countries.

Thanks for stopping by on this one.

Sometimes I am reminded of an 80s cliché, things that make you go, hmmm. Or, in this case...hoooo...

I wouldn't do it if someone paid me. Especially not if I were a man.

      Hi Zabbella

The pictures are cool, aren't they? Some of the places and spots picked for Owling are really amusing. I bet no one would have thought a decade back about getting their picture taken while perching like an owl at work.

Flora I see your point. But the minute we try to put some sense into this, we will hit a road block. It's like Planking. Everyone did it. Teens, adults, celebrities and even sports persons, on the sports field during live matches! So there is no real answer to the question of 'Why' would someone do it. It's one of those things that go viral but we still don't know why.

Drenguin, only time will tell! Some of the trends that go viral on the internet are really no-brainers. I guess we all need some entertainment, don't we?

I know! However Owling was less of a shock and surprise after Planking was already out there.

Meep. I've fallen victim to the Owl once, while out with friends. But then again...I am a teen.
