PHP snippets that could save your career

Updated on December 26, 2014

Whether you need a quick fix for your application or are just out to learn the secrets of the trade, these snippets will save your career as a PHP programmer. They are must-haves that will take your programming to the next level.

Dynamic ordinal ending to numbers

Adding 'st, 'nd, 'rd or 'th at the proper places is easy when you write it out, but what if you don't know the number before you write it out? This function will fix that ordinal ending dynamically based on what number is given.

Dynamic Number Ordinals

function ordinal($num){
    $test_c = abs($num) % 10;
    $ext = ((abs($num) %100 < 21 && abs($num) %100 > 4) ? 'th'
            : (($test_c < 4) ? ($test_c < 3) ? ($test_c < 2) ? ($test_c < 1)
            ? 'th' : 'st' : 'nd' : 'rd' : 'th'));
    return $num.$ext;
}

Fetch Latitude and Longitude from Address

It has been more and more important to use proper latitude and longitude when dealing with locations. Map services, such as GPS software, use these values rather than an actual address.

This snippet will automatically fetch the latitude and longitude of the address given.

Get Latitude and Longitude Of Address

function getLatLong($address){
    if (!is_string($address))die("ERROR! - Invalid Address!");
    $_url = sprintf('http://maps.google.com/maps?output=js&q=%s',rawurlencode($address));
    $_result = false;
    if($_result = file_get_contents($_url)) {
        if(strpos($_result,'errortips') > 1 || strpos($_result,'Did you mean:') !== false) return false;
        preg_match('!center:\s*{lat:\s*(-?\d+\.\d+),lng:\s*(-?\d+\.\d+)}!U', $_result, $_match);
        $_coords['lat'] = $_match[1];
        $_coords['long'] = $_match[2];
    }
    return $_coords; // returns an array $_coords['lat'], $_coords['long']
}

URL shortener

When the web goes more and more social, the need for shorter URLs are more important than ever. Many people don't realize that it actually only takes one single line of code to automatically get a shortened URL through services like TinyURL.

Single-line TinyURL Shortener

function getTinyUrl($url) { return file_get_contents("http://tinyurl.com/api-create.php?url=".$url); }

Dynamically Filled Dropdown Menu

Dropdown menus are very common and dynamic data is even more common. It can be tricky to combine the two though. Lucky for you, I happen to have a function that does just that.

Dynamically Filled Dropdown Menu

$data = array('One','Two','Three','Four'); //Array of values for the menu, replace with your dynamic data
fillSelect($data);

function fillSelect($selectOptions){
	echo'<select name="List">';
	foreach($listOptions as $option){
	    echo'<option value="'.$option.'">'.$option.'</option>';
	}
echo'</select>';
}

Automatically convert written URL to Link

This is a favourite for comment fields and articles alike. When the user writes a URL in the text, the function will automatically convert it to a HTML link.

Auto-Link URL

function to_link($string){ return preg_replace("~(http|https|ftp|ftps)://(.*?)(\s|\n|[,.?!](\s|\n)|$)~", '<a href="$1://$2">$1://$2</a>$3',$string); }

Script Execution Timer

I have had many situations where I add some code to an application and I find that everything is slowed down significantly. In order to debug which part of the script is hogging down the server resources, I need to time the script.
This piece of code will time your script and display how many seconds it took to execute.

Script Execution Timer

//Place this before the script
$time_start = microtime(true);

// Place your script/code here

//place this after the script
$time_end = microtime(true);
//Calculate how long it took to execute
$time = $time_end - $time_start;
//Display how long the script took to execute
echo "Script took " . $time . " seconds to execute.";

Thank You

This is not an exhaustive list of snippets, more will be added with time. I will also have other articles with snippets for other programming languages, so make sure to check out my hub.
