The New Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 Camera

I've been a fan of Panasonic Lumix cameras since I bought my Lumix FZ28 a few years ago. For it's compact size, the Leica lens takes consistently great shots and videos in many lighting conditions.

Panasonic has just recently announced the brand new Lumix GX8, their latest micro four thirds mirrorless digital camera that has several big improvements over their popular GX7 model which came out two years ago.

A few of those updates include a slightly larger and more solid design, a Venus engine, a 20.3 megapixel sensor that can take shots with crystal clear detail in many lighting conditions thanks to it's Dual I.S. (image stabilization) and the ability to process RAW images in the camera.

In addition, the Lumix GX8 can take 4K video which is 4 times larger than full HD.

I've included a video in this Hub filmed with the GX8 by photojournalist Daniel Berehulak and the color and detail this camera is able to capture is quite impressive.

In this Hub, you'll find an overview of the Lumix GX8, a list of some of the improvements over the GX7 model, what comes with the camera, what additional accessories you might want to consider if you're buying this camera.

You'll also find a video review, a list of compatible lenses, links to sample images and more.

A Video Review of the GX8 by Guilio Sciorio

What is a Mirrorless Camera?

“Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, commonly referred to simply as ‘mirror less cameras’, are interchangeable lens camera that do not have a mirror reflex optical viewfinder.” (1)

Some advantages of a mirrorless camera:

  • They can be used with a wide variety of interchangeable lenses.
  • They tend to be lighter and smaller than DSLR cameras.
  • They're usually quieter.
  • Models with an electronic view finder (EVF) have a more accurate live preview of how what you’re shooting will look.
  • You can use a mirrorless lens and many SLR lenses with a mirrorless camera too. Sometimes an adapter is needed, but there's no need to replace all your SLR lenses if you buy a mirrorless camera.
  • Superior video quality makes them popular with filmmakers.

My Lumix FZ28

I love my Lumix DMC-FZ28. It's not too big, has a nice zoom and the Leica lens consistently delivers stand out photos. I can't wait to upgrade to the Lumix GX8.

It is a bit outside of my price range at the moment, but I will be keeping an eye open for when they start to come onto the second-hand market. The video performance was stunning. I have an FZ150 at the moment which I love :D
