Review : Samsung Galaxy Ace
Samsung's latest entry to their midrange lineup of android phones, the Galaxy Ace. The Galaxy Ace has some really good features, such as an 800MHz processor, a 3.5" capacitive touch screen and comes pre-installed with Android 2.2 froyo. The larger screen and the iPhone like look mght appeal to some, but there is a catch. The Screen is a glossy one. Its very reflective and gets smudged easily. The 5MP camera takes some good pictures under natural light and is not too bad under low light conditions, but video recording is just pathetic - QVGA resolution at 15fps.In short, here are the pro's and con's of this phone:
- Android 2.2 Froyo
- 800MHz ARM 11 procesor with Adreno 200 GPU
- 3.5" Capacitive touch screen (320x480 pixels)
- Decent 5MP camera
- Good build quality
- Highly reflective screen
- Screen gets easily smudged
- Crappy Video recording
- Low amount of memory
- No front camera
So now I will go a bit more into the details of the phone..
Screen : The screen is a 3.5" Capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels. The screen is not pixel dense, in fact its got a lower pixel density than most other phones, but I dont really see that as a huge issue. The touch sensitivity is pretty nice and the phone overall is very responsive.
Hardware : Under the hood you got an 800MHz ARM processor, which is a nice bump above the more common 600MHz processor found on most other phones such as the Wildfire and the Optimus one. The RAM on this device is slightly lacking. Its just got 276MB of RAM, which is really surprising as i have seen higher RAM on lower end Samsung phones. 512MB RAM would have been awesome and would have gone well with Froyo, so this is where they have slightly messed up.
Software : The phone comes pre installed with Android 2.2 Froyo, this is about as far as it will go and I really doubt it will ever get a 2.3(ginger bread) or a 2.4 (ice cream) update due to the low amount of memory. The phone comes installed with some basic apps, but they have included Samsung apps, from where you can download a lot of apps for free.
Multimedia : Multimedia features on this phone are pretty nice. The audio quality via headphones is pretty good, may not be the best, but not bad at all, but you might want to upgrade from those cheap headsets they provide. The speaker volume is also average, nothing to really talk about. The phone comes with a 5MP camera that takes good pictures when in sufficient natural light, even under low light, the phone is not bad. It however suffers under artificial lighting. The video recording is really a joke. QVGA recording is just not up to the mark, its a blunder from their side but I hope they can fix it in a software update.
Thats about it, its a good phone but has some flaws, so decide accordingly. The LG Optimus one is a cheaper substitute to this phone. Its got essentially the same features just a smaller screen and a lower resolution camera. The motorola defy is an excellent option if you can shell out the extra 2k.
