Nokia Lumia 800 vs Samsung Galaxy S2

Updated on February 7, 2015

I've never compared an Android phone with a Windows phone. So I decided to try that out and for that I took two of the best mobiles out in the market. They are the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Nokia Lumia 800. Both the phones are awesome and stuffed with features. Galaxy S2 was released as an iPhone killer. But I don't think it "killed" the iPhone. It is a good phone capable of doing a lot of great stuff, but not worthy enough to kill the iPhone. Come on people! iPhone is an iPhone. Nothing can replace it. I'm sorry Samsung. Anyway, coming back to our topic, Nokia released the Lumia 800 recently with hopes of getting better sales. They haven't released any good phones in the recent past, with exceptions of maybe one or two phones. So is this phone good enough to beat the so called iPhone killer? Find it out yourself.

Operating System

I don't think we can compare the two operating systems. Both of them have their pros and cons. And I think its only fair enough to call off this category as a draw. Everyone might say that Android is better than Windows and there are millions of apps on offer. But I beg to differ. I think Windows Operating System is equally good.

Galaxy S2 runs on Android 2.3 and is upgradable to the latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich. Lumia 800 runs on Windows 7.5 Mango.

Chipset and GPU

Samsung Galaxy S2 has the Exynos Chipset and has a Cortex-A9 Dual Core processor. Lumia 800 has the Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset with a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor. Several reviews have shown that the Snapdragon single-core processor is way faster than the Cortex-A9 Dual Core processor of the S2, about 20%. So I will have to give this category to Lumia 800.

As far as the GPU is concerned Lumia 800 has an Adreno 205 GPU and the S2 has a Mali-400 MP GPU. So S2 will handle 3-D applications and games a little better than Lumia 800.

Screen And Display

The screen of the S2 is really large. It measures 4.27 inches compared to the Lumia, which is just 3.7 inches. So S2 is going to be quite a huge phone. S2 has a Super AMOLED plus screen of resolution 480x800 and it has Corning Gorilla Glass. The Lumia has an AMOLED screen of resolution 480x800 and it too has Corning Gorilla Glass. Even though the S2 is bigger than the Lumia it's lighter than the Lumia too. S2 just weighs 116 grams. Lumia weighs a whopping 142 grams.

So by looking at the size of the screen, the S2 wins in hands down. But the resolution is the same. And the Lumia 800 has brighter and crisper images compared to the S2.

Both the phones have an 8-megapixel camera. The Lumia 800 has a Dual-LED flash. S2 has an LED flash. Lumia 800 can record HD videos at 1280x720 pixels whereas the S2 can record full HD videos at 1920x1080 pixels. What is shocking is that the Lumia 800 doesn't have a front camera. S2 has a 2 megapixel front camera, for video calling.

So this category goes to the S2. If Nokia had given Lumia 800 a front camera it would've been really tight competition for the Galaxy S2.

Memory and RAM

Here is the major drawback of Lumia 800. It only has 512 MB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory which cannot be expanded. The Galaxy S2 has 1 GB of RAM and comes in 2 memory versions. One with 16 GB, which can be expanded up to 32 GB, and the other with 32 GB.

So this category goes to the S2 as well.

Both of the phones support 2G and 3G networks.

The S2 has a Li-ion battery of 1650 mAh. It promises a talk time of 8 hours on 3G and a standby time of 610 hours. The Lumia 800 has a Li-ion battery of 1450 mAh. It promises a talk time of 9 hours on 3G and a standby time of just 335 hours.

So here too Galaxy S2 beats the Lumia 800.

Both the phones are in the same price category. The Galaxy S2 is priced a little higher than the Lumia 800 but I surely don't think people will mind that at all. S2 is priced at Rs.27,900 (510$) and the Lumia 800 is priced at Rs.24,000(440$).

Final Verdict

I think I'll give this one to the Galaxy S2. My reasons for giving it to the Galaxy S2:

1. Better GPU

2. Better Memory

3. Better RAM

4. Front Camera (2 megapixel)

5. Bigger Screen

6. Lighter

mesmo com as pequenas disvantagens o nokia lumia é melhor ja que para um windows phone 512mbs ja esta bom de mas para o android 512mb é pouco porque consome muita ram e a camera do lumia é Carl Zeiss.
