Save your computer from those nasty internet viruses

Updated on May 5, 2008

Protect Your Valuable Information

A computer virus is defined as:

A potentially damaging computer program that affects or infects a computer negatively by altering the way the computer works, without the user's knowledge or permission.

Sounds bad, doesn't it? What measures does it take to stop these nasties from hitting you? You need a good anti virus program, while nothing will 100% protect you, an anti virus program and some common safe web habits will prevent many problems.

What program should you use? While there are many commercial programs out there you can find many that work great and cost nothing. Sound too good to be true? It's not... I myself have used many of the free software programs to protect my computer and many other computers.

There are two types of programs listed here, downloadable and online. Which one do you want to use? You always going to want a downloadable program so you can actively protect your computer while using it. The online versions are good if you already have a virus and no downloaded software. Sometimes the downloaded ones can't remove something, then it is a good idea to run an online one for a complete removal.

Downloadable Programs:

Avira AntiVir Personal - This powerful program is free for personal use. Even with it being offered for free, AntiVir has many features of the big guys. Capable of scanning 30 different archive types, a full system scanner and the Guard modules... you know you are being protected.

AVG Free Advisor - This well-known antivirus tool is available free of charge for personal use. Only needing low system requirements this is the ideal program for those with older systems or just don't want o use alot of system resources. This program also offers real time protection.

With these programs you will prevent many harmful software programs for getting to your system. Now for you part in protecting your system. Never download software unless you know it is safe. You may even want to scan the file before you run it. Never click on any of the popups that kinda look like a Microsoft window and say something like "you have a virus click here for a free scan" or something like that, this happens mostly while surfing the web. With these steps you should have a worry free internet experience.

Online Scanners:

Trand Micro House Call - HouseCall performs additional security checks to identify and fix vulnerabilities to prevent reinfection.

Kaspersky - This free online virus scanner is a great way to find out if you have any viruses or spyware on your machine without having to install new software. You can also see what viruses your current antivirus software let slip through! You just need to be online and using Internet Explorer.
