Social Media Detox

Updated on September 1, 2017

Over the past several years social media platforms have popped up everywhere, and all of them are vying for out ever decreasing amount of attention. Personally I use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, and to a small extent Instagram and Google+. I have always liked to pride myself that I am not one of those people who is always posting. This is true. On Facebook I post something probably once every two to three weeks. Instagram is less, but Twitter I post multiple times a week.

Even though I am not posting very often I do find myself on the sites always looking for the next thing that I can like, watch or laugh at. As I analyzed my habits I realized that I was using the platforms way more than I would like to. Many days I was spending three hours watching YouTube videos. This is not a path that I am comfortable going down in the long term even though in the present day it is very comfortable and can be very relaxing.

Because of this I knew that I needed to change my habits. I couldn't think of a better way to change my habits than by going cold turkey on all of these social media platforms. So for the entire month of September I am blocking the following websites: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, Reddit, Google+, Instagram. I have also taken the apps off of my phone so that I wont have the temptation to look at it there.

I have a feeling that this will be a challenge for me as I have made these services such a large part of my everyday life. One day into the challenge I have been surprised at just how many times I have thought about wanting to watch a funny video or check Twitter.

Because this will be a month long process I will give updates on how things are going, and what I notice during the process. I will also give a final review after I have completed the full month.

I have been someone who has often complained about not having enough time to do things. By taking part in this challenge I think that I will find the time that has somehow been missing for the past several years. I have a list of books that I have been wanting to read for a while, but have never gotten around to them. I think that I will see a remarkable reduction in the size of this list with the new found freedom that I plan to enjoy.

*** Note, I will still allow YouTube when it is purely educational. I had a problem with my car today and I needed to figure out how to remove a part. Because this was educational and not for fun I am not counting it against myself. In addition, there are likely many concepts that will be covered in my classes this semester that I will go to YouTube for further clarification.

*** You may find blog posts on my Twitter account. These are automatically posted, and don't require me to login to post them.

-God Bless
