Telstra or any Network - Mobile Phone use Availability

Updated on May 5, 2011

Next G Phone

CDMA Phone

Coverage & Availability CDMA Versus Next G

I cannot understand in this day and age with our modern technology, why we cannot travel across Australia from state to state and not be able to use our mobile phones.

On the nullabor we have emergency phones - Going from the West to the Eastern States. These are for emergency use only - some of these are at:

239k's from Norseman

300k's from Norseman

575k's from Norseman

60k's after Border

133k's after Border

If these phones are accessible for use via satelite, then why can't the powers to be organise satelite coverage for use by all.

Companies are selling the next G phones which are supposed to give good coverage, yet this has now been proved not to be so.

I have personally spoken to many travellers who have said they wished they hadn't bought one. In fact they wished they had not changed from CDMA.

We had no phone coverage after leaving Norseman until we reached the outskirts of Ceduna. I do not have one of the latest phones. Misguidedly I went with Telstra, thinking that would give me better access, that's why I went with them. How wrong could I have been.

Why has Telstra or the powers to be ruined something that was proven to work. Tragic consequences have resulted from their action in discontinuing with CDMA. People have lost their lives because of this new technology.

We have to admit, sometimes NEW is not always BEST.

Any Suggestions Please

Has anyone got any suggestions for what is the best

  • service
  • phone
  • CB
  • uhf

Or whatever other type. I would really be interested to hear any suggestions as to what really can work out in the outback.

I agree it is ridiculous they don't follow standards. Sadly the western nations are restricted by the phone companies and try to hav different standards, while nations like Korea, Japan they have unifying standards.
