The Basics of Creating a Website

Updated on May 1, 2012

In this era of advancement and technology, the internet has marked a special place in the personal and professional lives of people. Because of this, websites and blogs have become almost a necessity for everyone, who is trying to do any type of business.

In order to create a website, first you need to learn the basics of creating a website. Following are some important and essential steps that you must perform for creating a website.

1. Purchase a Domain Name:

The first thing that you have to do, in order to create a website, is to purchase a domain name. If anyone of you is not familiar with this term, let me explain it for you.

“A domain name is simply the name of a website. For example,,,, are all domain names of their respective websites.”

An important thing to do here is to decide on your domain name as soon as possible, and purchase it. It does not matter, if you intend to create your website a couple of months later; it is always wise to purchase the domain name as soon as you can. This is because, daily, hundreds of domain names are purchased. You never know that how soon your preferred name can be bought by someone else.

2. Select a Web-hosting:

The next step is to select a web hosting service, and to sign up with it. To those, who are not well-known about this term, given below is a simple definition.

“A web hosting service is basically a house that hosts your domain name with powerful servers, which ensure that your website remains accessible, open and alive 24x7. A web hosting is a place, where your domain lives and flourishes. It hosts your domain or website.”

3. Creating a Website:

After handling the purchase of domain name, and the selection of a web-hosting service, you should now move to the next step of creating a website. There are generally two types of modern-day websites. One is a simple static website, while other is a blog.

If you do not know much about the HTML or CSS coding, it may become quite difficult for you to create a website of your dreams. A great alternate of paying heavy amounts to the website developers is to check a good ‘website builder’. I would recommend it to anyone; have a look at them.

4. Search Engine Optimization:

The next step, after that your website has been completely and is fully functional, is to optimize it for the search engine. Search engine optimization is one of the most crucial aspects of receiving free traffic from the major search engines, e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

There are various advantages of creating a website, and they are all worth the efforts. In the beginning, it may seem a difficult task, but if you choose the right way, and put your efforts, creating a website is a fun and viable thing to do.

@Iwantfroyo, Khalblogo, Ruchira, Sueswan: Thank you :)

@Moneycop: I am a bit confused. Are they providing you a free domain name for a year? It sounds a bit odd, because the domain itself costs somewhere around $10/year (unless it is a .tk domain, which is not very valuable).

Depending upon your business, you have many choices. If you are about to start a personal blog - without the intention of monetizing your blog - go for

The learning experience would be a great one! Otherwise, if you are planning to start a business kind of thing, and monetizing your blog, it is always wise to purchase your own domain-name (.com or .net) and contact a reliable web-hosting service to host that. You will have complete freedom then. However, if you do not have much HTML or CSS knowledge, go for the ones, which have easy custom website builder e.g. Hostgater (Take a demo of their builder to see how does it suit you)

      Anything else? Just ask :)

      Best regards,

      Hunbbel Meer

      good pointers hunbbel.

These days wordpress is the IN thing so, sites should preferably be built using that format and couple of SEO key tags.
