What is Broadband Internet?

Broadband internet access is a technology that allows internet users to perform multiple tasks without speed or bit rate limit. The use of broadband connectivity may benefit the internet user in his or her everyday tasks and activities. The great number of activities that people perform on a daily basis can be speed up with broadband internet access, saving lots of time, and increasing productivity. Broadband internet access can bring about many benefits to students, house wives, professionals, and companies alike. The demands of today´s modern world can only be achieved effectively through broadband internet access.

Broadband internet access refers to communication bandwidths that use an extensive range of frequencies to easily send and receive data over the internet. The wider the bandwidth, the greater the information that you´re going to be able to send or receive. In the beginning of internet, the only way to access it was through the use of dial-up, which use a 56k modem, and it took hours or even a whole day to download archives, such as songs or movies; moreover, you could not use your telephone and internet at the same time. In the present, fast internet access is considered as broadband with a download data transfer of at least 4 Mbit/s downstream and one Mbit/s upstream. The data transfer rates tend to become higher as new technologies develop in the market.

Broadband became available at the beginning of this century, offering downloading speed times of ten times faster than dial-up; however, like many new technologies, the prices for the use of this technology were not affordable by most people. This has changed over time, and most consumers have been acquiring broadband internet access with increasing speeds that become faster every year. The benefits of being able to communicate with faster speeds over the internet encompass many aspects of life, such as education, business, shopping, entertainment and health, among many others.

That is true, Ericdierker. Internet cafes were the trend in the last decade. Fortunately, broadband or ultra-broadband internet will become available due to customer demands and those people who really need a fast connection for performing a variety of tasks through the use of next-generation applications will be benefited from the uptrend technology.

Broadband has certainly improved the experience of the internet user. I remember how tedious it was trying to browse the web on dial up. I got broadband on one of those low introductory rates, now I'm hooked. Thanks for a good read. Voted up.

I think most countries going through your transition have basically the same issues. Internet Cafe's are fantastic. We even did a martketing of internet cafe's where we advertised through them. I liked that period as you had some actual social interchange along with Internet use. The phone is the needed wireless breakthrough.

That is true; however, prices for that technology are not available for the middle class. Only the rich and those with healthy economic acquisition can access the more advanced technologies.

With more than 70 million internet users, Mexico has stepped into the more advanced technologies. Telmex, the biggest telephone company in Mexico is about to Launch Ultra-Fast Broadband Network with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. This will provide big amounts of traffic and multimedia content to the most remote areas in Mexico. The only problem is that the prices do not reflect the true economic acquisition of the some classes in Mexico; however, over time, most people will be able to access this technology, including me.

I access wireless internet from a public library. It allows me to download rich media files, which usually takes anywhere from two to five hours, while I´m working on something else, but I´m thinking on subscribing to a more faster type of connectivity as soon as I make enough money to pay for that.

    Muy Bien Maestro,

Our need for quick homeland thinkers is really important. Mexico has a great challenge to jump over hardwire and into wireless. We have some other wireless models to follow and broadband via cooperative wireless is critical. Each Ejido must step up.

I enjoyed reading as I was involved in the transitioning. (not a techie but a polywog) If you could expand this rich and important history to developing nations I think you would be amazed. The mere act of wiring something is a whole other ball of wax. Thanx for a great hub.
