Updated on April 22, 2015

Drones aka Quadcopters.

Most of the drone pilots these days are into quadcopters for several reasons. One of them is that most of the quadcopters are designed with a higher degree for crash protection. Stability and making sure that your drone won't crash is very important. With that, beginners as well as advance enthusiasts are happy to use this new form of toy. There are plenty of quadcopters available in the market today. The best part is anyone with a $100 or less can buy one maybe two!

If one is outdated or you feel that there is a better model I am always listening!

UDI U818A 2.4GHz 4 CH 6 Axis Gyro RC Quadcopter with Camera RTF Mode 2

This drone from UDI is said to be best for beginners since their frames are designed to protect the rotors from destruction during crashes. The rotors are also cheap, so, a beginner who often crash this drone will be spared from a high cost. This drone also includes video cameras, so, any beginner who desires to get into aerial photography will be happy.

With a $100 dollar budget you can actually get two of these.

Check out the many videos online to see how the Camera on this thing works. If there is any wind at all the camera is not that great at staying still, however the camera footage looks great! You really can't beat what you get for the price. Check out this review on Amazon and check out the footage the person got.

BLADE Nano QX BNF Quadcopter

You can have fun flying this tiny toy in your bedroom or in the office. Just make sure the boss isn't around to catch you or unless you are the boss(I hope). Playing is not only more fun on this but with this nano since it has a SAFE or Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope technology-- a great safety tool. You are saved from trouble by just simply letting go of the sticks- this will make it safely hover itself.

Many inexperienced users have said that it is "hard to fly." Having some skills before flying this is not a bad idea.

A couple of helpful tips:

  • When you bring it out try to make sure it has a full battery.
  • Watch for hair or anything that can get stuck in the props.

Watch it in action

Air Hogs RC Helix X4 Stunt, 2.4 GHZ Quad Copter

The Air Hogs Elite Helix X4 Stunt can perform three awesome stunts with a simple push of a button. This is very cool, especially for the younger users. It can backflip, barrel roll, and do a 180 flip. This product flies with great durability since its exoframe technology gives high rotor protection.

This is another solid choice however let's be real. All of these are under $100 and are great at improving your pilot skills. The more you fly the better you will get-- getting a model like this is a great idea especially if you are just learning to pilot.

This quadcopter weighs 65 pounds and can lift as much as 33 grams.

Cheerson CX-10 Mini 29mm 4CH 2.4GHz 6-Axis Gyro LED RC Quadcopter

This tiny thing has three-level adjustable speed functions and has adjustable gyroscope that promotes flying stability. Choose the mode that best suits you and start flying! 4 screws holds this together making it somewhat easy to service it if needed.

If you are a beginner this is another harder to use quadcopter. Beginners can use it, just make sure you know what you are doing.

It is recommended that you get some extra blades along with the prop protector ring. If you use this toy quite a bit then there is no doubt that you will need extras.

Flying time is around 4 and a half minutes. If you use this frequently, 5-6 times a day, that number can be cut in half.

Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider

This awesome little drone, having a capacity to take photos, can be played with indoors and outdoors. It is both has easy controls and is nimble-- plus it does tricks! It can be connected to a smartphone or a tablet via Bluetooth Smart Technology. Easy piloting is the strong point- with the free application FreeFlight 3. This is a record breaker among the quadcopters, this is the first one that has the ability to fly and roll on the ceiling.

People tend to really like this, however with almost all of the smaller/cheaper drones there are always going to be issues.

  • Low resolution photos are something that you can deal with, especially for the price.
  • The battery life is only around 6 minutes.
  • You must have a smartphone to use this.
  • This is much easier to use because it stabilizes itself.

Syma X5 4 Channel 2.4GHz RC Explorers Quad

For just over $50 this is a great choice for a beginner and certainly a blast for the experienced. With the price of half the budget this is definitely one that you should think about getting. Don't expect it to do any cool tricks-- what it does is flies very well. It has also been said that it can fly further than advertised.

This one from Syma is amusing during night flights because it has an array of colorful flashing lights. The blades are excellently protected with highly elastic plastic circles.

This is so much fun that you are going to want ot do it gain and again.

You might want to think about buying extra batteries to keep this thing in the air! As with all drones the problem is that they can't stay up there forever. The good thing is that this can actually last 10 minutes, which is quite a nice feature. Many of the other quads you will find for under $100 won't come close to that.

DJI the Holy Grail of Affordable Quadcopters

If you aren't interested in having a budget and would like to see what the above choice compare with.. Well check out the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+, or better yet the DJI Phantom 3. I have just recently gotten this myself and obviously none of the models for under 100 will come close to comparing.

This of course is going to cost anywhere from 10 to 20 times more than any of the quads I listed above. This is the best model you can get that is affordable to the average consumer-- not to mention this thing can rival other drones that can cost $2000+.

The precursor to getting this is learning to fly with the drones above. Of course this is far from a toy and can be used for business along with pleasure. I plan on making all types of time-lapse videos with the ground station-- which automatically flies the route for you.

If you were wondering what drone is on top of everyone's list, well this is it.

The DJI Phantom 3 with the release date May 15 is the most affordable/best choice when it comes to aerial photography.

Be smart while flying

Although most of the above quadcopters can't really do much. It is important to know that there are certain things you shouldn't do.

Make sure that if you are using a Drone or Quadcopter that you take the necessary safety steps. Check the area for planes, powerlines, or trees. Also make sure to stay away from any airports or where there are people that can potentially get injured.
