The Importance of Computer

Updated on November 17, 2015

The advantages of computers

We all know how important the computer is in today’s world. One cannot over emphasize on the importance of the computer. The computer has come and made life extremely easier for everybody in this world - whether you are in the United States or you live in the African country of Uganda you need a computer!

In this article we are going to take a look at the major importance of the computer and how it has made life extremely easy for us all.

And the numerous importance of the computer are as follow:

Computers perform calculations and other mathematical functions with great ease and swiftness.

Thanks to the various sophisticated software and programs that we have these days we can easily use the computer to perform difficult financial calculations such as calculating Interest Rate, calculating the Payroll, doing very difficult accounting works such as preparing Profit/Loss account, preparing the Balance Sheet, among several others.

For example, with a very powerful software from software giants Microsoft called Microsoft Excel, one can easily do all sorts of numerical calculations with relative ease. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet. And as we all know, a spreadsheet is an accounting program. With Microsoft Excel you can perform various accounting tasks and financial calculations. For example, you can use Excel to balance your account books. You can also use Excel to make charts and graphs. This is an example of how powerful the computer can be when it comes to performing calculations and mathematical functions. Can you imagine how difficult performing these tasks would be in the absence of the computer? Please don’t even begin to imagine because it scares the hell out of me!

Computer makes the creating of music very simple

Musicians of today are also using the computer to make music. Gone are the days when you had to actually know how to play musical instruments and sing very well in order to be called a musician or in order to actually make good music. Today things have changed dramatically. Many musicians of today barely know how to sing or even play a musical instrument such as the piano or the guitar yet these musicians have gone on to become some of the world’s most famous musicians. This has been made possible thanks to the computer. The computer has come and made the creation of music very simple and fast. Almost everybody who has some basic computer skills can sit behind his or her computer and create music. We have very powerful music-making software like FL Studio and Logic Pro which are used by famous musicians all over the world to make great songs. Many songs that you hear on your radio today are made mainly with the aid of computers and very powerful music-making software. The interesting part here is that even though the majority of these songs are not even made with a single real musical instrument, they are actually topping the music charts all over the world. People love them like crazy! Just take famous electronic musicians such as David Guetta, DJ Avicii, Tiesto, etc, who are making fantastic and danceable songs from their bedrooms and home studios with nothing more than a laptop computer and some music-making software such as FL Studio or Logic Pro. These musicians are releasing songs that are topping major charts all over the world. Can you believe this?

This is a sharp contrast to the times of bands such as the Beatles, The Smiths, Queen, Genesis, ABBA, etc where everything had to be done in the studio and real musical instruments actually had to be played in order to create music. Today, things have changed dramatically thanks to the computer. Now you can sit in your home and create a chart topping song within a matter of minutes. How times have changed!

Computers have made drawing and designing very easy

At first it could take an architect or an artist an awful amount of time and effort to come out with their finished works. But things have changed in this industry thanks to the use of computer. The computer has significantly reduced the amount of time and effort these professional use in creating their finished work. For example, a professional like an architect can now use certain programs on his computer to easily and expertly design whatever it is he wants to design or built such as a building or a bridge. Having finished with the designing of his object, if he notices that there are certain modifications that need to take place on the object he has designed, he quickly makes these modifications onscreen with a few clicks of the mouse. But back in the day, this would have been utterly impossible. Let us just assume this: In 1902, if it took an architect 1 year to design a major bridge in the city, in 2014 it would take an architect a fraction of that time to design a similar project. Thanks to the computer and some very powerful architectural software, architects today don’t suffer in performing their jobs as much as architects in the olden days did.

The computer has also made the designing of things such as book covers, greeting cards, calendars, birthday cards, etc extremely easy. With a simple software such as Microsoft Publisher almost everybody can design these things with relative ease.

Computers are very essential in the banking industry

I seriously can’t help but wonder how banks would operate today in the absence of computers. The banking sector would have been extremely miserable without the use of computers! Computers have become very indispensable tools in the banking industry. And without them, the banking industry would be crippled. With the computer, bankers are able to carry out various tasks ranging from simple to very complex ones. The computer helps work to be done more quickly and efficiently in the banks. All customers’ data are stored in the computer and retrieved easily whenever they are needed.

Today thanks to the computer, many banks are switching to online banking, which sees majority of banking transactions done online. This means that a customer does not necessarily need to enter into the banking hall in order to operate his or her account or make a transaction. With online banking, a customer can in a matter of seconds check his or her account balance, transfer money to another person, and even get his or her bank statement. All these tasks can be done without even stepping a foot in the banking hall. This is what is referred to as electronic banking. And electronic banking is made possible by the kind courtesy of computers and the internet.

Computers are important in the medical field

Just like in any other field, computers are highly needed in the medical field because doctors need them in order to save lives. Doctors use computers to diagnose patients and treat them. An example of how vital computers are in the medical field is the use of the very powerful procedure called the Computerized Tomography scan popularly known as the CT Scan which doctors use to thoroughly examine patients. The CT scan helps doctors to get a cross-sectional view of a patient’s anatomy. This is very important because doctors are able to thoroughly screen patients for all sorts of diseases. For example, the CT scanning of a patient’s head can easily detect if a patient is suffering from grave conditions such as hemorrhage or brain tumor. It can also be used to detect heart diseases and so much more.

It goes without saying that the very powerful CT scan is made utterly possible by the aid of computers. So you see that the computer in the medical field is very important. Doctors actually need it in order to save the lives of their patients and also for research.

With computers came the birth of the internet

Not too long after computers came the internet was also born. And of course we all know that the computer enables us to use the internet to achieve countless number of things. With a combination of the computer and the internet, the sky is the limit in terms of the things that we can do! One can sit in the comfort of his or her home and achieve so many things by simply using a computer that has an internet connection.

Here are some of the numerous things that you can do with a combination of the computer and the internet:

  • You can shop online from the comfort of your home without even stepping a foot outside your house.
  • You can entertain yourself by watching movies and listening to music online. Of course you can also play numerous free games online.
  • You can browse the internet for information on any subject or topic. The amount of information on the internet is limitless. And every second, more and more information goes online.
  • Searching for information is extremely easy using a computer and the internet. Whatever information that you need, you are sure to find it on the internet.
  • We use the computer and the internet to communicate. Here, communication is made possible through emails, chats, social media, etc.
  • You can also study online and get your degree online which is basically the same as any other degree that you get from physically attending a university.

If I am to carry on with the importance of the computer and the internet I could write more than a book on the topic, so I am going to end here by saying that the things the computer can be used to achieve through the internet is limitless.

Computers are very good in storing information

When it comes to the storing of information, nothing does that better than the computer. Simply put, nothing stores information like a computer can. And also it is very easy for you to have access to the stored information on the computer whenever you need it. This is what makes the computer the best place to store information.

Computers cut down costs in running businesses

Thanks to computers, businesses all over the world are cutting down costs and increasing profits. There are so many reasons why computers make this possible. First of all computers make work faster, and as we all know time is money in the business world. Also computers help organizations and businesses to save tons of money in the sense that they cut out paper use and allow for greater efficiency.

Last but not least, for example, the work needed to be done by three or more people can now be easily done by a single person thanks to the computer. This means businesses can reduce the cost of having extra workers and get the job done faster and more efficiently. The computer has come and enhanced daily office routines.

Computer is very essential in scientific research

Scientists cannot do anything meaningful without the use of computers. The computer is a very crucial device that all scientists use in making researches and coming up with their numerous inventions.

As you can see from the points I have raised above, the importance of computers to mankind are so many I could say they are never ending. If I therefore decide to carry on with the advantages of the computer, I really don’t think this article will have an ending.

Gone are the days when it was thought that having a computer in your house or office was a luxury. Today computers are necessities. A time will come when nothing in this world can be done without the use of a computer. Computers are taking over the world, which is why it is imperative for everyone to have a basic knowledge in computing. Without having some basic knowledge in computing you’d surely find it very difficult doing so many things in life. This is the reason why today you’d find it difficult getting a white-collar job if you are not computer literate.

Computers make the world go round. Life would be brought to a standstill if computers were to suddenly seize existing.
