The Internet Taking Over Our Lives

Updated on July 31, 2013

The Advantages of the Internet

The internet, or the worldwide web as it is also popularly known, has changed our lives. Some say it has changed them for the better, while others would surely disagree. But hey, the same as with other things and inventions, the internet also has its pros and cons.

One of the biggest pros for me is the quickness of the internet. Let me explain, I am not just talking about the speed with which the highest speed internet operates and lets you browse the websites, I am more interested in the quickness with which one can easily find the information needed. You simple google what you want and in most cases you can find what you are looking for within seconds, or at least minutes.

Another great advantage of the internet is that you are able to speak or communicate with friends and family all over the world. And you do not need to pay enormous amounts of money to do so, you simply talk to them via skype or gmail chat. It is also a great way of getting to know new people all the time, if you are into that sort of thing, that is.

Huge advantage of the internet, at least in my eyes, is also that it offers additional way of earning some extra cash. Whether you are into writing articles, marketing or advertising products online, the internet has made it easier for you to earn some extra cash, without leaving the comfort of your own home.

What I use the Internet for?

I have to admit that I have become somewhat obsessed with the internet. Not a day goes by that I don't surf the worldwide web.

I use the internet for sending emails to my friends and of course work-related emails. I am not, or at least I am trying not to be, one of those people who bombards his friends with spam emails of kittens playing or old men farting etc. It is just not my cup of tea, I guess. I prefer to send emails that have some relevant information or a link to a movie or a nice music video.

Of course I love using the internet for meeting new people, chatting with new people, which is always fun and can also be pretty fascinating and interesting, since no two persons are the same. It is also a great way of getting to know new cultures and new countries, and hey, it is also a way of getting friends who will offer you a place to stay if you are ever to visit their country.

Like probably everyone, I also enjoy watching movies on the internet and listening to music. I think that music was one of the first factors that drove me to use the internet in the first place - some of you maybe still remember Napster?

I have recently started browsing the worldwide web for websites where I could publish my stories, my articles (ergo Hubpages) and I must say that I have really enjoyed this experience - so far.

The Disadvantages of the Internet

Along with all the positive things that the worldwide web has brought and given to us, there are also plenty of disadvantages of this amazing technological breakthrough.

One of the first disadvantages that comes to mind is of course safety. Although the internet has over the years become a much safer place for all of us, there are still quite a lot of glitches which are unsafe. Some people are still afraid of paying on the internet using the credit cards, since you hear a lot of stories of people getting their information and their money stolen via the internet.

Another disadvantage of the internet may lie in the fact that you never know what is true and what is not on the internet, since you never know who is sitting on the other side of your chatting screen, if you are chatting with someone, as you also never know which information, that you found on the internet is true and valid and which is not. But those are the risks that we all have to take into account when browsing the web.

Another con of the internet, which many probably will not see even as a disadvantage is that people just stopped reading and buying books. We are living in the age of technology where everything is available to us on our computers and Ipads, and people simply stopped caring for the written word.

Does it really matter if we "socialize" and chat in person or virtually? The things that are being said today about the worldwide web and social media were said about the telephone.
