These days, most of the action in the tablet market is taking place in 7-inch segment. Famously derided by the late Steve Jobs, the 7-inch Android tablets must have been giving the current crop of Apple executives enough sleepless nights to override their departed CEO's oft-position vis-a-vis the smaller tablets.

But this time, Apple may be in for a surprise. The iPad mini faces more than credible competition from both Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire, the market's segment's bestselling tablets so far.

Below are some features of iPad mini, Nexus 7 and Kindle FIre HD.

Powered by a dual-core A5 chip, the iPad mini, with its 7.9-inch presence, is considerably bigger than its 7-inch rivals. Also its 1024 x 756-pixel screen pales in comparison with that of the Nexus 7. Its connectivity options include WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and lightning to USB. later models include support for 3G and LTE. The iPad mini comes in WiFi only and WiFi + cellular models, with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants.

Equipped with a complete list of features and backed by Google play, the Nexus 7 is the first Android tablet to feature the Jelly Bean edition of Google's mobile OS. Featuring a 7-inch WXGA multi-touch display with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution and IPS panel, the nexus 7 is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz Nvidia Tegra CPU and 1GB of RAM.

The early version came with 8GB of internal storage; however, the new edition recently announced by Google comes in 16GB and 18GB variants.

Wireless connectivity options include WLAN g/b/n, Bluetooth 3.0, microUSB, and a docking pin. Its lithium polymer battery offers up to 9.5 hours of operation for this 198.5 x 120.0 x 10.45mm, 340gm tablet.

Presently, the new Google Nexus 10 was only announced around a week ago but in many circles it had been anticipated since the announcement of the Google Nexus 7. Just a few short months after the Nexus 7's launch and Google is taking the fight to Apple, going head to head for tablet supremacy.

Amazon's kindle Fire was the segment's best selling tablet for a while, until the Nexus 7 came to give it some serious competition. Ahead of the iPad mini's coming, Amazon refreshed its Kindle line of tablets, including the Kindle Fire HD. Coming with a 1280 x 800-pixel HD display, the Fire HD is designed for high performance with its 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core. It boasts of dual-antenna WiFi, which promises 40 percent faster downloads and streaming, compared with the iPad 3.

There are more than 22 million movies, TV shows, books, songs, and apps available for owners of this 7-inch tablet from amazon.
