Then and Now

Originally robots were just a joke. An imaginary thought in folks heads. Television romanticized robots as machines that could take over the world, etc. Now fantasy is becoming a stark reality. Once upon a time robots were small, plastic battery operated, remote controlled gadgets. Those days are long gone.

Smart phones, self driving cars and now robots. Robots can be controlled by an individual or more recently they work with computer hardware, software and other hardwired circuitry which makes them capable of astonishing things. Artificial Intelligence is a fear for some people in the industry who fear a machine take over. Robots are all around us and the Android population s steadily growing to be sure.

Robotics for Toys & Learning

Robots have long been used in the workplace for certain jobs. But toys such as the Furby which came out in the 90's was able to learn English and other things. Furby knew zero English only Furbish. This mini robot could be taught English and certain expressions. Many robotic toys have came along including a robot toy that uses an I Phone for a face and an App to make it do tons of things and obey commands. Although kids toys can be fun these computerized robot toys can teach and learn. Instead of skateboards kids will soon be flying on hover boards. Instead of watching the robot maid Rosy on the cartoon "The Jetson's" Children will have their own robots at home. I Sing the Body Electric, indeed.

Humanoid Robots

Humanoid Robots were originally just a part of peoples imaginations but now in 2015 Japan has led the way in Humanoid production. To be honest they look and act just like a real human and it is hard to tell the difference. Japan has over 40% of the world's robots. The Androids that are made to look human and have expressions such as smiling and looking confused. It's hard to know what to make out of life lie Bots. I think they can be useful but looking just like everyone else is a little frightening to me.

ASIMO & Such

Honda came out with the ASIMO robot which has been programmed to do many functions including: pouring drinks, dancing, walking up stairs, talking and even playing soccer. Asimo which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, can run almost 4 MPH, weighs just 106 pounds and stands 4 feet 3 inches tall. Asimo can recognize when its battery is low and finding its charging station and recharge itself. Amazingly, the 2015 version of this Android can shake hands and give verbal answers based on hand gestures or voice commands.

Robot All Over....

Robot Toys are becoming more and more sophisticated. When Furby was released in the mid 90's it had the ability to learn English from its owner. In the warehouse robotic arms are loading hot steel from one location to another. The richest of us will be the first to test market true home androids, humanoid style.

The possibilities can go on and on with robots. Today they can vacuum your carpet but in the near future they will cook, wash dishes and wash and dry he clothes.

Robots in Film and Television

Robots have been portrayed in television shows and movies for decades and truthfully much of that technology is now really happening. The Will Smith film called "I Robot" is still a little ways off from being a reality but it is no longer far fetched. Then, of course, you have the androids in the film franchise "The Terminator" or Rosie the robot maid from The Jetsons. Lest we forget all the robot and humanoid based episodes of The Twilight Zone. The bottom line is that all the fiction about robots is now non fiction. For better or for worse, we are entering a robotic age.
