The Ultimate List of Recipe Software

Updated on October 5, 2011

Whether you're a professional chef or a total beginner in the kitchen, recipe software can save you time, space, and money in the kitchen.

In addition to storing and organizing your recipes, many recipe software programs offer extra features such as meal planning features and automatic grocery list creation. Other common "extra" features include the ability to automatically add recipes from websites such as, the ability to print out attractive recipe cards (or even entire cookbooks!), and the ability to add a pantry list of ingredients you have on hand to receive recipe suggestions using those ingredients.

When choosing the best recipe software for your needs, be sure to consider the following points:

  • Operating system. Make sure that the recipe software is compatible with your operating system.
  • Price. There are both free and paid recipe software programs available. Paid software tends to offer more features and other benefits, but be sure to read and compare feature lists carefully. It doesn't make sense to pay for extra features you won't use if you can find a program that meets your needs for free.
  • Support and documentation. Different software programs offer very different levels of support. If you're not very experienced with computers, it's important to make sure the program you're considering offers the level of support that you need.
  • Aesthetics and user-friendly design. Though not the most important factor by any means, an attractive and easy to navigate user interface will make your recipe software more pleasant to use than an ugly or poorly designed one.

I've been trying to use for my recipes because I can take photos of them and see the original recipe (for the memories). However, I can't make notes to the recipe and they are stored in a cloud which I'd really rather have on my computer/tablet and not have to be online to work. Any suggestions? I know there is a 'paid' level of but don't know if it actually allows me to download all my recipes on my computer.....might you know? Thx for any advice. Your list is very impressive and I'll be researching them.

I find and store many recipes on Pinterest. When I find a recipe I love and know I will want to make again, or try with changes, I will store it using PepperPlate.

      I'm a bit biased because it's my site, but I like :)

You can organize recipes from the site, add your own and make personal notes on any or all of them if you like.

That is an impressive list of recipe software, I didn't realize there were so many different ones. I'm curious to know if you use any of these programs and maybe you have a favorite one?

I love cooking and collecting recipes. I have written a lob of hubs on recipes and am currently working on a recipe website. I know I could use some recipe software to help me get organized. I am definitely going to look at some of the free software you listed here. Excellent hub!
