The new 'must have' app for 2013 - 4 Pics 1 Word review.
A new app in town...
There’s a new number 1 app in town, and its taking smartphone owners by storm. 4 Pics 1 Word (What's the Word), a gaming app where players must guess a word correctly from looking at four pictures with a similar theme has been an immediate hit and has been sitting happy in the number 1 spot of the UK app store (top 5 in the US) since it’s release.
How to play
Like all successful apps (think Logos Quiz, Draw Something etc) the premise of the game is very simple. The player is given 4 pictures, and 12 letters, they must then guess the word that the pictures signify correctly.
The words are between 3 and 8 letters in length and the pictures are used as a clue to what the word is. For example a 4 letter word with images of an ice cream, an ice cube, an igloo and a person dressed up warmly in a hat, scarf and gloves give you the word Cold.
If you get stuck and are unable to guess correctly, then you have just two options, ask on Facebook, or buy 'bombs'. These bombs are used to get rid of some letters or show you which letters are used in the word, although they will never give you the ful answer. The bombs cost coins which you achieve by guessing more words correctly, or you can buy the coins with real money.
A major falling point of this game, you cannot try to guess another word or move on until you have correctly guessed the random word you have been given, Even closing the app will not change the word to something else, therefore you get stuck, a lot!
Example of gameplay
Many players of this addictive game are getting frustrated, as much as it’s simplicity is what makes it so successful, people do not want to pay for ‘bombs’ to give them hints. Puzzle app players have got used to the free hints of Logos Quiz and expect a bit of help but you won’t get any help on this game without paying... enter the ‘cheat sites’....
It seems when any puzzle app come out now, there is a cheat site not far behind, and 4 Pics 1 Word is no different. In fact, the barage of sites claiming they have the answers is likely what is keeping the app so popular. Without them, people would give up, frustrated at the fact they couldn't move up a level or have the opportunity to guess any more words. But with opportunity to have the answers even just for that one that your stumped on, means you can carry on enjoying the game.
So is it the new Logos Quiz/Draw Something/Words with Friends?
Well in terms of it's rise to mega popular proportions, yes. 4 Pics 1 Word shares the fact that it shot to the number 1 spot in the app store very quickly with these other cult gaming apps. As far as game play, the app is very addictive for both old and young alike, it spans the generations with such a simple idea.
The developers have hinted that there will be an update with new words to guess every week, if they can make this happen, this will no doubt become one of those apps you must download immediately when you get a new smartphone/tablet (think Angry Birds style phenomenon). The fact that it spans both iOS and Android is a new idea, most developers just stick with the one. Potentially this oh so simple app could break boundaries, and maybe the excitement surrounding this one is justifiable.
