The Hand that Controls the Sock Puppet Could Get Slapped

Updated on August 22, 2010

Sock Puppet Perils

Several prominent bloggers have recently been caught and embarrassed for sock puppetry. Last year one or two writers lost their jobs after their anonymous blogs praising their columns were traced back to them. An article from today's NYTimes is linked below.

The highest profile case of a CEO-blogging faux pas involved Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey who was exposed last summer by the Wall Street Journal for using a pseudonym to post anonymously for eight years on a Yahoo Finance forum in whish he cheered Whole Foods and critiqued his competitor Wild Oats, which Whole Foods ended up acquiring. Here's a link to a Detroit Free Press article on Mackey's deceitful blogs and others involving Coca Cola, WalMart and Burger King.
