Updated on October 9, 2012

A virus is just like an infection in human body as it spreads in the computer and can cause several problems but the good thing is that there are several programs available that can prevent our computers from viruses, having a good antivirus software is a bare necessity nowadays, but finding the right one and the best one can be a little tricky, in the starting days antivirus software’s were capable of detecting and removing viruses only but now they are also capable of removing Trojans, malware, spyware, rootkit. Here I give you a review of the best antivirus software’s available that can protect your computer without you having to spend a single penny on them.

Microsoft Security Essentials : This is a new antivirus by Microsoft, it is absolutely free, it is a very light software with very good detection rates and is capable of detecting malware, Trojans, rootkit, viruses. Automatic updates work fine and the antivirus database can be automatically updated whenever new updates are available. The interface of the software is also very easy-to-use, it is pretty light and consumes less system resources than most of the other software’s.

Avast Free Antivirus : Avast is one of the biggest competitors in the antivirus market and is undoubtedly one the finest antivirus software around. It is loaded with many features, real-time protection capabilities including web,email,P2P,network shields, boot-time scanning. When the point comes on using resources it is one of lightest antivirus software out there. All in all it is a very good antivirus program, fully featured, with protection that is capable of detecting the latest viruses, spywares, Trojans, it also provides network protection with its network shield feature, email protection is also another good feature that adds to its armory. Registration is required to get the software but for the features and protection that it provides, I think registering for it is well worth it.

AVG Free Antivirus : AVG has been around in the market now for over a decade now and has made its name and is now a well known software, it has a bunch of loyal users still attached to it, it is not entirely free, its professional version costs you a bit of money, considering the requirement of an average home user, its free version is more than enough and has enough protection to protect a single computer. Its user interface is quite simple and is also not very heavy on resources.

Bitdefender : Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus software that has been out for a long time now, it has developed its reputation very quickly and is now a trustworthy program. It provides advanced protection against viruses, phishing attacks, spyware, malware and various other real-time threats. The download only takes a few minutes and installing it is also no brainer. It is one of the most powerful antivirus software around in the market and consistently stays in top rankings due to its efficient detection and removal of viruses, Trojans, etc. The latest version has a new feature which prevents the leakage of personal information via E-mail, web or IM. Considering the resource usage it is a little bit heavy but the amount of protection and features that it provides, I think it is a must try.

Panda Cloud Antivirus : Panda cloud antivirus is sort of a newbie as it came in 2009, but in a small amount of time it has gained rapid popularity. The main reason behind its popularity are its easy-to-use interface that has no room for hesitation, minimal usage of system resources and cloud based database update so you don't have to update the database. The detection rate is also very high. It’s a nice little antivirus program with a simple interface, with no cost to it. It is a very good antivirus program for an average user that does not like populated interfaces with many options, if you are a user that is not technically inclined enough and want a simple to use software with decent protection, you better give Panda cloud a shot.

Avira AntiVir Personal: If you are looking for a simple to use and a light antivirus software, you better give Avira a try, it works perfectly fine to detect virus, spyware, rootkit threats. The best part of Avira is that it is quiet outstanding in terms of finding malware.Few false positives about Avira are that it does not include E-mail scanner in free version, but if you open any infected E-mail, it comes into action. One downfall is that it shows up ads with every update, but all in all it is a very good and east-to-use software with very high detection rate.

Comodo Antivirus + Firewall : Comodo started out as a commercial software but now it is available for free for both personal and commercial use. It is also quite light on resources with a simple and easy-to-use interface. It offers real-time scanning, automatic updates, email scanning, detects worms and spyware.Database updates are done on daily basis and Host intrusion detection allows you to protect from attacking viruses, spywares, and other malware. It is also a good antivirus software that has enough features for an average user with decent protection.

Rising Antivirus : Rising antivirus is also a very good and simple antivirus software that is pretty much like you install and forget about it, rest will be upon its shoulders. It is good at detecting viruses, Trojans, malware.
