The Best Inventions of the Auto Industry

These inventions do not pertain to an automobiles performance under the hood. This list is referring to add on features designed specifically for a car, truck or van.

1. Global Positioning System or GPS Navigation: This in my opinion is a cool invention. Even though I have a pretty good sense of direction, GPS will get me where I am going. With the use of satellites now, GPS is a simple device to use and it is always right. It is also fascinating that it talks to you and gives you step by step instructions so that you don't have to constantly look at the screen. This invention has prevented a lot of folks from getting lost and needing help. What an invention because it sure saves people lots of time when traveling.

2. Car Phone: Today it does not seem like a big deal because, now everyone has a cell phone that we carry in our hand. When they first came out, the phones were large and they were a part of the car. They were usually mounted in the middle console. Thank goodness this has been updated! Look at it this way, if the car phone had never invented, then we would never have the invention blue tooth either.

3. Anti-Lock Brakes: You can tell if you have anti-lock brakes because, your car will stop on a dime. It gives you added protection during bad weather. In general, anti-lock brakes have a longer shelf life than their predecessors. Once you have used both brakes you can definitely tell the difference because anti lock works far better and is an improvement over the old breaks from the past.

4. Rear View Cameras: This camera kicks into gear when you put your car in reverse. By looking at the screen, you can in real time see what is behind you. This will aid in helping you get a better view of what is behind you. This is a very neat invention that will probably be standard on all vehicles one day. You are still advised to not truly trust the screen. Nothing

5. Radar Detector: This device is used to help you know when emergency vehicles and law enforcement are in the area. This lets you know that you may need to slow down coming up or even get out of their way. Some states have made these devices illegal because many people use it to get away with speeding.

6. Car Radio: A great way to pass the time, whether stuck in traffic or taking a vacation or just a long drive. With any type of music you want or whatever mood you are in, there is a station for everyone. Along with car radios, came cassette players and then, CD players. Now cars have progressed so much, that a USB cord can play through the car.

7. Car Alarms: These alarms will usually make a loud noise and keep thieves from stealing your car and/or the valuables inside. Also, car alarms are controlled by a small hand held device that is usually attached to the key or keyring. Great way to keep theirs away from your car especially if you want to protect your valuables.

8. Airbags: This should arguably be the first on this list since this has to do with saving lives. If you have a wreck the airbag comes out of the dash and expands to protect the driver and passenger from sustaining serious injury.

9. Windshield Wipers: Believe it or not but, when cars first came out, no cars had windshield wipers. Drivers just had to stay off the road during increment weather. Wipers can move in different speeds depending on how bad the rain is coming down.

10. Sunroof: The car that I own now a blue Honda Accord has a sunroof and I have really enjoyed it. I love to ride through downtown with the sunroof open and look at the tops of the buildings through the roof of my car. Too cool! Some sunroofs can be opened all the way or they can be partially opened.

Honorable Mentions:

11. Automatic locks and windows. It was just simply a big improvement over roll up windows.

12. Keyless Car Starting. This is a luxury invention that very nice to have. It really spoils you.

13. Heated Seats. These seats are very useful in the winter or, when your body is achy.

14. Cruise Control. This allows you to relax on a long trip.

15. 4 Wheel Drive. This invention helps you get your truck out of tough spots such as mud or a ditch.

Auto Technology Never Stops

Every year cars are starting to become equipped with more and more items. Technology never sleeps. Many of the innovations have been focused on safety which is always a plus.

We went from home phones to car phones. From roll up windows to automatic windows. Heck, we went from turn and crank motors like the T- Model Ford to push to crank or crank with a remote technology.
