Top Gaming Netbooks - Starcraft Capable

Updated on February 3, 2011

The Most Powerful Netbooks for Gaming

Are you a frequent traveler that loves to play the latest game? Do you need a small laptop that is super easy to transport, preferably in your backpack? If so, you need a gaming netbook, although some companies like to market these as ultra-portables.

A netbook is the smallest of the laptops, typically with an 11" screen. It will not contain a DVD or CD drive in order to minimize it's size and power consumption. For gaming purposes, it should have a powerful GPU for video graphics processing.

Can your netbook play Starcraft 2?

The litmus test for a netbook seems to be how well it can play Starcraft 2. If your laptop, netbook, ultra-portable can do a decent job with that game, then most other games should run okay.

  • Alienware M11X: You can get this unit with either an Intel Core 2 duo or an i5 processor, 4 GB or ram, 320 GB Hard Drive, and an Nvidia Geforce GT 335 graphics card. If you get one with the i5 processor, you will have the most powerful gaming netbook available.
  • HP Pavilion DM1Z: The latest in AMD Fusion APU technology. This little beauty sports an E350 fusion processor. Includes 3 GB DDR3 ram, 320 GB Hard drive, and an LED backlit screen (1366 by 768 pixels), a/b/g Wi-Fi, 3 USB ports, a webcam with integrated microphone.
  • Acer Aspire AO721: This unit uses an Athlon 2 processor with ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics card with 384 MB ram. 1366 by 768 pixel LED display, 2 GB DDR3 ram, 250 GB hard drive, 1.3 megapixel camera, 3 USB ports, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The Alienware M11X is by far the best netbook for playing Starcraft 2. The other two laptops will require you to greatly lower your settings although they can also play Starcraft 2 at reduced frame rates.

Amazon actually sells Alienware laptops and netbooks for less than buying them direct from the manufacturer. You still get a great warranty, no shipping costs on orders over $25, and no sales taxes in most places. I have some links to Amazon below if you want to check them out further.
