Monitor Your Precious - Peace of Mind

Continuing strides in technology and safety of our loved ones, baby monitors are a sought after accessory for any parent, rightly so. Baby monitors are simple but highly effective in making sure the distance between parents and baby are never far apart.

These superb gadgets are designed to keep an eye or ear out of your precious baby's movements whilst in their crib.

Baby monitors consist of a transmitter placed close to your baby and receiver which you can carry around your home so you are always in constant contact.

If the baby wakes the transmitter will make sure you hear it by playing the sound in real time over radio waves to your receiver. You can then attend quickly to your babies needs. Baby monitors bring you piece of mind.

In modern times baby monitors come in various forms with video, pressure pads and night vision you can rest assured your baby will always be safe and well, not only that but if your baby is quiet for too long some baby monitors will be activated and gently stimulate your baby to make sure all is well.

This is a superb feature and has been developed due to horrible situations like cot death.

Decisions Decision - Which Baby Monitor?

There are many baby monitors on the market to choose from and it can be a little overwhelming. How do you chose? Hopefully this will help you decide what baby monitor is suitable to your needs.

According to Which? baby products survey, (January 2011) more than 700 mothers were asked what they felt was the most important feature when choosing a baby monitor? The top 5 results were:

  1. Sound quality
  2. Reception / range
  3. Price
  4. General ease of use
  5. Portability of parent unit

There are not many analogue devises on the market these days due to digital technology. The old analogue devises picked up too much interference and noise sending crackly sounds to the receiver.

The micro processors in digital monitors cuts out noise and makes sure the only sounds you hear are those of your baby and the nursery. These devises are known as DECT (digitally-enhanced cordless telecommunications). These are far more superior than analogue.

Another form of transmission is FHSS (Frequency-hopping spread spectrum) which jumps or "hops" from one frequency to another rather than having a fixed frequency. This provides security and stops interference providing clear signals being sent.

Video baby monitors are becoming increasingly popular as you can see and hear your baby. These can be used during the day and at night, so all day peace of mind.

The infra-red of the night vision makes sure your baby is not disturbed by the light produced and is not harmful. The image is then sent to the receiver where you can view your baby on a small monitor, some devises allow you to connect the receiver via your TV, laptop or tablet.

The range of the baby monitor indicates how far the transmitter can be from the receiver whilst still getting a good solid signal between the two. A good monitor will allow the transmitter and receiver to be more than 80 meters away, thus the parent can be 80 meters away from the nursery and still receive a good accurate signal.

A poor monitor will only allow for around 20 meters, but although stated as poor, your home may only require a 20 meter range. It's all down to your own personal criteria.

What's the most important feature of a Baby Monitor?

After looking at the survey results above, what do you think is the most important feature of a Baby Monitor?
