Best desktop speakers

Updated on December 25, 2010

While gaming or watching movies, the audio can make a hello lot of difference in the whole experience, a great audio system makes a game or movie a lot more immersive, hence speakers are something that should not be neglected.

There are a lot of different speaker systems available in the market, I will just talk about in brief about some of the more popular speaker systems available in the market today. So here are my picks for great speaker systems for different budgets :

Logitech Z-4 2.1 Speaker system:

These 2.1 speakers have good sound quality. It has one active driver and 2 pressure drivers that provide overall good and complete sound. It comes with a control pod which has an AUX input too, so you can hook it up to you iPod / cell phone/ any other MP3 device.

Satellites: 8.5W RMS each, total of 17W RMS
Subwoofer: 23W RMS

Price: Rs4500

Altec Lansing MX5021 2.1 Speaker System

This is one of my favorites, this system is THX certified, which basically means that it will provide you a really really good audio experience. It comes with a wired control pod and a wireless remote too.The only downside I see in the system is that the system is pretty big and bulky. The wires are also a mess, pretty long, should be kept tied up. These speakers are hard to find these days, the MX6021 has replaced this system, but costs a lot more.

Satellites: 20W RMS each, total of 40W RMS
Subwoofer: 50W RMS

Price: Rs6700

Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System

These are great value for money speakers for those who seek a 5.1 surround experience. These are decent for Gaming and movies if you have the space and skill to hide the wires (i hate that!) . The speakers are powerful enough for a small room, but not suitable for large rooms or halls. It has a wired control pod with an AUX in.

Satellites: 7.4W each , 15.4W Center, 45W RMS total
Subwoofer: 25W RMS

Price: Rs 5500

Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Speaker System:

This is one of the best speaker system you can buy for you PC, this THX certified system looks really great and performs even better. This has pretty powerful speakers and a good subwoofer too, this can surely rattle your room ! The system comes with a LED backlit control pod and a wireless remote. I have read about many people facing a small issue with the system, that the LED backlight of the pod dies out after 6-7 months of use. So you can either send it for RMA or live with it. The system is pretty expensive, but can be used as an Home theater system even in a moderately large room.

Satellites: 64W RMS each(x4), 69W RMS center
Subwoofer: 188W
Total: 505W RMS

Price: Rs18,000

I am using Logitech X-540 speakers, overall, I am happy with sound quality, but bass ''lacks'' some times.

the first time i head them, the Bass was actually pretty good, maybe they must have changed the internals in the latter versions, but I think they have stopped production now(not sure), but these were awesome for %70 :)
